The museum's exhibition covers the rich heritage of the region: from the mysterious ancient Oc Eo civilization that flourished here in the 1st–7th centuries, to the traditions of modern ethnic groups—Khmer, Vietnamese, and Chinese. Vietnam is presented here in all the diversity of its crafts, beliefs, and the daily life of the inhabitants of the country's "rice bowl."

The museum stands out for its innovative approach to presenting information, using multimedia presentations, 3D models, and video games. This makes the visit interesting not only for history buffs but also for families with children who want to learn about the geography and social evolution of the south in an accessible way.

What to Do

A walk through the museum halls in Can Tho is divided into thematic levels, each revealing new facets of life in the region. On the first floor, visitors can explore the daily life of local peoples in detail, seeing mannequins in traditional costumes and full-size models of ancient buildings. Special attention should be paid to the unique artifacts of the Oc Eo culture and items telling the history of fishing in the Mekong Delta.

The second floor is dedicated to more recent historical periods, including the years of resistance and the struggle for independence. Here, samples of weapons, rare archival photographs, and maps are presented. For those interested in the biographies of great people, the ceremonial hall, which houses exhibits dedicated to outstanding heroes and cultural figures of Vietnam, will be of interest.

For a deeper immersion in the atmosphere, it is recommended to use an audio guide or book a tour, which will help reveal the meanings hidden behind ancient musical instruments and textiles. The museum also offers interactive zones where you can learn about traditional crafts such as weaving or pottery, making the visit truly educational.

Getting There

Finding the museum building is quite easy, as it is located in the very heart of Can Tho at 1 Hoa Binh Street. From the famous Ninh Kieu wharf or the central markets, you can walk here in just a few minutes while enjoying the atmosphere of the busy streets and local architecture.

If you are arriving from Can Tho Airport, which is about 10 kilometers away, it is most convenient to take a taxi or use the Grab mobile app — the trip to the center will take about 20–30 minutes. For those traveling from Ho Chi Minh City, comfortable intercity buses are available, with the journey taking between 4 and 6 hours. It is also convenient to get around the city itself by rented bicycle or motorbike taxi.

History & Facts

The history of this cultural institution began on July 31, 1980, when the authorities of Hau Giang province decided to establish a museum. The first visitors were able to see an exhibition on the revolutionary struggle as early as December of that same year. Since then, the collection of the museum in Can Tho has grown steadily, enriched by valuable finds and donations from patrons.

The Can Tho Museum received its current name in 1992 following the administrative division of the provinces. In 1998, a large-scale construction of a modern building began, with an investment of over 17 billion Vietnamese dong. The grand opening of the new complex took place in late August 2001, marking a new stage in preserving the heritage of the southern region, which Vietnam is so proud of.

One of the most significant sections of the collection consists of finds related to the Oc Eo civilization (1st–7th centuries AD). These artifacts prove that the territory of the modern Mekong Delta was an important hub for international trade and cultural exchange even in ancient times. Today, the museum houses more than 5,000 items, including unique amber relics and works of applied art.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all three floors of the exhibition, study the multimedia materials, and examine the details of ancient costumes, most travelers need about 1.5–2 hours. This is enough time to form a complete picture of the history and biodiversity of the Mekong Delta.

If you plan to use the services of a professional guide or want to study the temporary themed exhibitions in detail, you should set aside at least 2.5 hours for your visit. A visit to the museum fits perfectly into a morning or afternoon itinerary before a stroll along the city's famous waterfront.

Working Hours

Please note the specific operating schedule: the museum is closed to visitors on Mondays and Fridays. On weekdays (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday), it welcomes guests in two shifts: from 08:00 to 11:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00. On weekends, the museum is also open during the morning hours, and on Saturday and Sunday evenings from 19:00 to 21:00, you can visit the evening exhibitions.

As the schedule may change due to public holidays or temporary exhibitions, tourists are advised to check the latest information on the official website of the institution immediately before their visit.
