The National Memorial Chorten, also known as the Thimphu Chorten, is an iconic Buddhist monument located in the heart of Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Situated on Doeboom Lam in the south-central part of the city, it is one of the main landmarks and is considered the most visible religious structure in the entire kingdom, attracting both pilgrims and tourists alike.

This chorten has one distinctive feature. Unlike traditional Buddhist stupas, it does not contain the remains of the Third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, in whose memory it was built. Instead, his photograph in ceremonial attire is placed in a special hall on the ground floor. The construction of the memorial was carried out according to the wishes of the King himself, who sought to create a spatial representation of the mind of Buddha.
Its majestic white structure with a golden spire is not only an important place for prayer and meditation but also a symbol of peace and prosperity. A visit to the National Memorial Chorten offers a unique opportunity to touch the spiritual culture of Bhutan and feel the calming atmosphere of this sacred site.
