Плаж Бургас - Beach Burgas

About

Burgas Beach, often referred to as the Central Beach, is a spacious and picturesque coastal area in the city of Burgas, considered one of the primary natural gems that Bulgaria is proud of. The main feature of this spot is its unique dark sand, rich in magnetite, which not only looks spectacular in photos—reminiscent of the exotic beaches of the Canary Islands—but also possesses healing properties.

The coastline stretches for almost 2 kilometers, and the width of the sandy strip reaches 100 meters in some places, allowing everyone to settle in comfortably even during the peak season. Thanks to the gentle slope into the water and the absence of sudden depth changes, the beach is very popular with families with children. Despite its proximity to a major port, the Bay of Burgas is famous for its clean water and calm sea.

Directly adjacent to the beach is the famous Sea Garden (Morska gradina)—a vast green zone with shaded alleys, sculptures, and flower beds. This proximity creates a unique microclimate, allowing tourists to alternate sunbathing with relaxing in the cool shade of the trees. Burgas Beach is not just a place for swimming, but the heart of urban life, where nature harmoniously blends with modern infrastructure.

What to Do

The coast provides excellent conditions for a classic summer holiday. Visitors can comfortably sunbathe using sun loungers and umbrellas or stay active by renting catamarans and pedal boats. The shallow sea floor makes swimming safe even for the youngest travelers, for whom sand play areas are often organized.

One of the main landmarks is the famous pier ("The Bridge"), which extends 300 meters into the Black Sea. It is an ideal spot for romantic walks, photo sessions, and contemplating the endless sea horizons. At night, the bridge is beautifully illuminated, creating a special atmosphere.

For those who prefer active leisure, the proximity to the Sea Garden offers plenty of opportunities: from yoga on the grass to long walks among exotic plants and sculptures. Music lovers know this beach as the main arena for the Spirit of Burgas festival, when the shore transforms into a massive open-air dance floor. Numerous cozy bars and cafes along the promenade are always ready to offer refreshing drinks and fresh seafood dishes.

Getting There

Getting to the coast is easy, as the beach is located in the very heart of the city. The most scenic route is through the Sea Garden: simply head down one of the many staircases leading directly to the sandy shore. City buses run regularly from all parts of the city, stopping within walking distance of the park area.

If you are arriving at the international Burgas Airport (BOJ), the fastest way to get there is by taxi, which takes about 10–15 minutes. You can also take bus No. 15 or No. 11, which will take you to the city center in approximately 20–30 minutes. For those traveling from neighboring resorts like Sozopol or Nessebar, it is most convenient to take an intercity bus to the Burgas bus station, from where the beach is a 15–20 minute walk.

For travelers with their own cars, parking is available along the streets adjacent to the park; however, in the height of the season, it is best to arrive early to find a spot. History & Facts

The territory of modern Burgas has an ancient history dating back to the Bronze Age. Archaeological finds indicate that as early as 1500 BC, there was active copper mining and trade with the Greek world here. Later, Greeks from Apollonia founded the settlement of Pyrgos, which translates to "tower," and during the Roman era, the city became an important colony with developed thermal baths and clinics.

The modern name of the city was finally established only in the 16th century. For a long time, Burgas remained a small fishing settlement, and its true flourishing began only in 1903, when the French company "Batignolles" built a large port here. This event turned the city into a major economic center of the southern Black Sea coast and gave impetus to the development of urban infrastructure, including the coastal zone.

The beach itself began to take its modern shape alongside the establishment of the Sea Garden in 1889. The talented gardener Georgi Duhtev transformed the deserted shore into a blooming garden, creating a unique landscape that is now the pride of the city. It was then that the beach evolved from a mere fishing spot into a proper recreation area for residents and guests.

Today, Burgas Beach is not only a natural landmark but also a venue for world-class cultural events. Since 2008, it hosted the famous Spirit of Burgas music festival, which featured world-renowned stars, making the location iconic for music lovers from all over Europe.

Time Needed

To simply enjoy the sea and sunbathe, you usually need about 3–5 hours. This is enough time to appreciate the clean water and the soft, unusual dark sand. However, Burgas Beach offers much more than just lazy relaxation by the water.

If you plan to combine swimming with a walk through the shaded alleys of the Sea Garden, a visit to the pier, and lunch at one of the seaside cafes, you should set aside 4–6 hours or even the whole day. The evening is perfect for catching a picturesque sunset on the famous pier stretching far into the sea.

Working Hours

Access to the Burgas Central Beach is open to everyone 24/7 every day. You can come here early in the morning to catch the sunrise or take a stroll along the water's edge late at night under the starry sky.

Lifeguard stations and official equipment rental points usually operate during daylight hours, typically from 08:00 to 18:00 during the summer season; however, the territory itself remains accessible for walks 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
