Retro Museum

About

If you want to take a real journey back in time, the Retro Museum in Varna is a must-see on your itinerary. Occupying a vast 4,000 square meters within the Grand Mall, this museum was the country's first large-scale project dedicated entirely to the 1944–1989 period.

This unique attraction in Bulgaria offers visitors a glimpse into the socialist era through the lens of everyday life. It features more than just exhibits; it showcases true symbols of the era: from chrome-glinting cars to the household items that surrounded people for decades. The museum masterfully recreates the atmosphere of the past, turning a simple stroll into a fascinating historical immersion.

The popularity of this place stems from its universal appeal: the older generation finds a reason for pleasant nostalgia, while younger tourists get a chance to see a world that was radically different from today. This is not just a technical exhibition, but a comprehensive cultural retrospective, designed with great attention to detail.

What to Do

The main draw for visitors is the grand collection of over 70 cars manufactured in Eastern Europe. You can take a close look at legendary models such as the Volga, Moskvitch, and Lada, as well as Trabants and Skodas, which are rare sights on modern roads. The crown jewel of the collection is the majestic GAZ-13 Chaika limousine, which once served top party leadership.

In addition to the cars, the museum features:

  • Wax figures of prominent personalities—from politicians like Leonid Brezhnev and Fidel Castro to Bulgarian pop stars.
  • An extensive selection of motorcycles from brands like Simson and Balkan.
  • Thousands of household artifacts: vintage TVs, cameras, doll collections, cosmetics, and even packs of filterless cigarettes that were common half a century ago.

While walking between the rows of perfectly restored machinery, be sure to notice the small interior details and accompanying accessories—they allow you to feel the spirit of the times much better than dry historical facts.

Getting There

The Retro Museum is located in one of the city's most popular shopping destinations—Grand Mall Varna. It is easy to find, as the shopping center is situated on one of Varna's main traffic arteries. If you are arriving by public transport, take the buses that run along Vladislav Varnenchik Blvd—these routes connect the city center, the airport, and the train station.

For those who prefer comfort, a taxi ride from the city center will take only 10–15 minutes. If you are traveling by private or rental car, you can leave it in the mall's spacious multi-level parking lot, making a visit to the museum convenient in any weather.

History & Facts

The Retro Museum officially opened on May 1, 2015. The date was chosen intentionally—Labor Day symbolically echoes the socialist era to which the entire exhibition is dedicated. The idea for creating such a space came from private collectors who spent years gathering and carefully restoring artifacts of the past.

Since its opening, the museum has evolved from a private collection into one of the city's most visited cultural venues. While there were 39 cars on display on opening day, the collection has now grown to 70 specimens, and this number continues to increase as new rare examples of machinery are found.

Interestingly, all the vehicles on display are in working condition. The museum's restorers have put immense effort into returning the cars to their original glory, using original parts and authentic interior materials, making the collection truly invaluable for automotive historians.

Time Needed

To explore all the halls at a leisurely pace and study the car collection in detail, visitors usually need about 1.5–2 hours. This is enough time to take photos and read the information about the main exhibits.

However, if you are a true enthusiast of technical history or want to carefully examine the hundreds of small household items—from vintage perfumes to toys—we recommend setting aside at least half a day. The exhibition is very dense, and many details deserve individual attention.

Working Hours

The museum is open to visitors daily, making it easy to include in your weekend plans or a weekday walk around the city. The doors open at 10:00 AM and welcome guests until 7:00 PM without a lunch break.

The operating schedule is the same for all days of the week—from Monday to Sunday. Nevertheless, it is recommended to arrive no later than one hour before closing to ensure you have time to see all sections of the exhibition before the lights are turned off.
