The zoo occupies a significant territory near the Dolphinarium and the Natural Science Museum. It was founded not only as an entertainment facility but also as an important center for wildlife conservation. It strives to instill in visitors a love for the natural world and a careful attitude toward its inhabitants, making a visit here educational for guests of any age.

The institution's special pride is its role as a rescue and rehabilitation center. Since 2007, the zoo's specialists have been actively involved in treating injured animals, helping them grow stronger and return to their natural habitat. This ecological approach turns a simple walk into an introduction to an important humanitarian mission to protect the region's biodiversity.

What to Do

Strolling along the well-kept paths of Varna Zoo, visitors can encounter dozens of animal species from all over the world. Among the most popular residents are majestic lions, brown bears, graceful fallow deer, and curious kangaroos. You can also see llamas, panthers, and even penguins here. Special attention should be given to the bird section, which features great white pelicans and elegant swans.

After getting to know the fauna, you can relax in one of the cozy rest areas or stop by the on-site cafe. Shaded alleys allow for comfortable walks even on hot summer days, while enjoying the fresh sea air. Varna Zoo is the perfect place for those seeking a peaceful outdoor escape right in the city center.

Getting There

Located in the northern part of the famous Primorski Park (Sea Garden), the zoo is within walking distance for those already strolling along the city's central promenade. Nearby landmarks such as the Dolphinarium and the Natural Science Museum, located just a few minutes' walk away, can serve as helpful guides.

If you are coming from the city center, you can use public transport — buses heading toward the resorts of Golden Sands and St. Constantine and Helena stop near the park entrance. You can also easily reach the site by taxi; the trip from the central squares takes no more than 10–15 minutes. For drivers, parking is available in the Saltanat area, from where you can walk to the zoo entrance.

History & Facts

The history of this place began quite unusually in 1956. It all started with a bear named Maxim, brought as a gift by sailors from the destroyer "G. Dimitrov." A small house was built specifically for the clumsy guest in Primorski Park, which became the first stone in the foundation of the future zoological garden.

The zoo officially opened its doors on April 30, 1961, although the main construction took place over several years under the guidance of architects Bistra Markova and K. Karakashev. They aimed to integrate the enclosures as naturally as possible into the park's landscape. The first official residents, besides Maxim the bear, were red deer from a local hunting ground, including the famous deer named Longoz.

Over the years, the collection expanded through international exchange. Thus, llamas, panthers, and even penguins arriving from Berlin settled in Varna. Today, the zoo continues to develop, maintaining its traditions and actively participating in conservation programs for rare animal species. Since 2007, the institution has been officially recognized as an important bird rehabilitation center, having returned over a hundred rescued individuals to the wild.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the enclosures and enjoy a walk through the shaded alleys, a typical visitor will need approximately 1.5–2.5 hours. This time is quite sufficient to get to know the main residents, take beautiful photos, and let children play on the special playgrounds.

If you plan to catch the animal feeding times or want to study the information stands in detail as part of an educational program, it is worth setting aside about 3 hours. The zoo territory is compact and very convenient for a walking route, making a visit here easy to plan as part of a larger stroll through the Sea Garden.
