Since 1953, this institution has been officially recognized as a cultural heritage site. It serves as the main repository for unique finds discovered during excavations on the Black Sea coast. Here, history comes to life, spanning thousands of years — from prehistoric times to the flourishing of ancient civilizations.

Today, the museum on Aleko Bogoridi Boulevard is considered the city's primary cultural attraction. It is not just an exhibition of artifacts, but a true treasure trove that helps visitors understand how the face of this region has been shaped over the centuries.

What to Do

Inside the museum halls, an amazing world of antiquity unfolds before visitors. One of the main treasures is an impressive collection including more than 2,000 ancient coins. These finds are a testament to the bustling trade conducted by the ancient Thracians on these shores.

Walking past the displays, you can see exquisite silver jewelry, ancient vases, and ceramic vessels that remained hidden for centuries underground or on the seabed. Art lovers will be interested in the figurines and everyday objects that provide a detailed look into the daily lives of Greek colonists and subjects of the Roman Empire.

Special attention should be paid to artifacts from prehistoric settlements dating back to the 4th–5th centuries BC. Additionally, the museum features a unique collection of rare stones and minerals that complete the historical picture of the Bulgarian lands' wealth.

Getting There

The museum holds a prominent spot in the very center of the city at 21 Aleko Bogoridi Boulevard. Thanks to such a convenient location, it is easy to reach from almost any part of the city.

If you are staying in the central areas, a pleasant stroll along the pedestrian streets will lead you right to the museum doors. For those who prefer public transport, stops for popular bus routes connecting the center with the suburbs are within walking distance.

You can also always use a local taxi. The trip from the central railway station or bus station will take just a few minutes. If you are traveling by private car, keep in mind that parking in the historic center may be limited.

History & Facts

This collection dates back to 1912, when it originated as a private initiative of a local archaeological society. For the first three decades, enthusiasts carefully gathered unique ethnographic and archaeological treasures, forming the foundation of the future collection.

A new chapter in the institution's history began in 1946, when the collections were handed over to the state and the museum itself received national status. A huge contribution to its development was made by the young archaeologist Ivan Galabov, who led the museum during this crucial period. In 1953, the museum was officially recognized as a cultural heritage site.

The museum moved to its current building on the busy boulevard in 1981. Since then, it has served as the main guardian of the region's political and economic history, illustrating the development of these lands from ancient times to the present day.

Time Needed

To explore all the halls without rushing and carefully examine the most valuable exhibits, it usually takes 1.5–2 hours. The exhibition is quite compact, but the abundance of small details and coin collections may extend your stay.

If you are interested in ancient history or numismatics, we recommend setting aside a bit more time — about half a day — to leisurely read the information plaques and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of ancient eras.

Working Hours

The museum welcomes visitors according to the following schedule: Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 17:00. Sunday is a day off.

Please note that opening hours may change depending on the season or public holidays. We recommend checking the latest information on the official website before planning your visit.
