ASANA OLD WOODEN HOUSE Cocktail Bar

About

Asana is a unique place hidden in the very heart of the lively city of Siem Reap. This bar is located in the last remaining traditional Khmer wooden house in the Old Market area, making it a true historical gem among modern buildings and noisy establishments.

Unlike the loud bars on neighboring Pub Street, Asana offers an atmosphere of comfort, tranquility, and authenticity. Here you can feel the spirit of old Cambodia, resting on soft pillows or in hammocks right inside the wooden structure on stilts. The establishment specializes in signature cocktails using local herbs, spices, and rice wine.

What to Do

The main reason people come to Asana is for rest and relaxation in an authentic setting. You can settle on the second floor of the wooden house, choosing a cozy spot on the floor with pillows or in a hanging hammock. It is the perfect location to take a break after visiting temples, watching life down below while enjoying the quiet and shade.

You should definitely try the signature cocktails. The menu here is unique: drinks are prepared using traditional Khmer ingredients such as turmeric, ginger, wild lime, tamarind, and Sombai rice wine. This is a great way to get acquainted with local flavors through bar culture.

For those who want a new experience, the bar offers cocktail making classes. Under the guidance of an experienced bartender, you will learn about the properties of local herbs and spices, learn how to mix them in the right proportions, and create your own drink with Khmer character.

Getting There

Asana Bar is located in the very center of the tourist zone, in an alley parallel to the famous Pub Street. Thanks to its central location, it is very easy to get there on foot if you are already walking in the Old Market area. Look for The Lane alley—the establishment is hidden from the noise of the main street, but finding it is not difficult thanks to signs.

If you are coming from a hotel, the most convenient and popular way is to use a local tuk-tuk. Just tell the driver "Asana Bar" or show the location on a map in The Lane area. A trip within the city usually costs little and takes 5–10 minutes. A taxi is also available, but a tuk-tuk will provide a more authentic experience of moving around the city.

History & Facts

The building in which the bar is located is a true historical artifact. It is the last remaining traditional wooden house in the Old Market area. Built in the late 1950s, it miraculously survived the Khmer Rouge era and the period of rapid modern development, when most similar structures were demolished for the sake of concrete hotels and shops.

The name "Asana" itself comes from Sanskrit and means "seat" or "meditation pose," which perfectly reflects the concept of the place—a sanctuary of calm amidst the city bustle. Originally, the house belonged to a local family and served as a living space, preserving the architectural features of Khmer architecture: stilts, wooden floors, and an open layout for natural ventilation.

The owners of the bar carefully restored the house, trying to preserve its original appearance as much as possible. The interior is filled with sacks of rice, hammocks, and antique utensils, which allows guests to literally experience the lifestyle of Cambodia in the middle of the last century while enjoying modern service.

Time Needed

Usually, 1–2 hours are enough to visit this unique place. This time is sufficient to leisurely enjoy a couple of signature cocktails, relax in a hammock, and soak up the atmosphere of the old wooden house, taking a break from the heat and noise of the street.

If you plan to take part in the Khmer cocktail making masterclass, which is often held here, you should set aside about 2–3 hours for the visit. This will allow you not only to learn something new but also to taste your creations in a relaxed environment.

Working Hours

Official opening hours may vary depending on the season and holidays. As a rule, the establishment opens its doors in the afternoon, closer to the evening, and stays open until late at night, welcoming guests at sunset and after dinner.

We recommend checking the current schedule on the official website or the bar's social media pages before your visit to ensure you get into this cozy place.
