History & Facts

Storybook Gardens in London, Canada, opened its doors in June 1958, and almost immediately, its history was enriched by a funny and memorable event. Just days before the official opening, a sea lion named Slippery escaped from the park. This incident caused quite a stir, as the fugitive was only caught 10 days later when, to everyone's surprise, he swam all the way to Sandusky, Ohio, in the USA. This event remained in the memories of locals for a long time and became a park legend.

In subsequent years, Storybook Gardens also operated as a zoo. However, in 2008, the London City Council decided to close it as part of a new business plan. On January 31, 2012, it was decided to send the remaining seals to St. Louis. Unfortunately, this initiative turned into a tragedy. On June 8, 2012, two seals, Peanut (18 years old) and Atlantis (11 years old), died during transport. Soon after, on June 13 of the same year, another seal, Cri Cri (19 years old), passed away at the Indianapolis Zoo during treatment. Following these sad events, no exotic animals remained at Storybook Gardens.

Since the zoo's closure, the park has undergone significant changes, shifting its focus from animal display to creating an interactive and playful environment for children and their families. Today, Storybook Gardens is a place where fairy tales come to life. The park offers various attractions, themed playgrounds, and entertainment programs, immersing young visitors in a magical atmosphere. The core idea is active recreation and fostering children's imagination in a safe and engaging setting.

Of course, the exact duration of your stay at Storybook Gardens may vary. On the other hand, if your goal is just a quick look at the main zones, you might manage in 2-3 hours.
