Daytime temperatures often fluctuate in the range of 26-28°C, while nights bring relief with temperatures dropping to 16-18°C. Precipitation
Taiyuan observes a distinct seasonality in precipitation distribution. The city is characterized by a long dry period, especially in winter, and a wetter summer season when the bulk of precipitation falls. In general, the climate can be described as relatively arid, given the low annual averages.
The wettest months in Taiyuan are July and August. In each of these summer months, an average of 5 mm of precipitation falls. However, it rains quite often: July sees an average of 16 rainy days, and August has about 14. This indicates that while summer precipitation is not abundant in total volume, it is quite regular. June and September also bring some precipitation (about 2 mm), with approximately 8 rainy days in each.
The driest period falls during the winter months. December, January, February, and even March are distinguished by extremely low precipitation amounts – an average of 0 mm per month. Although these months may record from 1 (in December) to 4 (in March) "wet days," practically no measurable precipitation falls. This means that heavy snowfalls are uncharacteristic for Taiyuan, although minor snow events are possible at sub-zero temperatures. The spring months of April and May, as well as November, are also quite dry, with precipitation amounts around 1 mm.
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Taiyuan, it is important to choose your wardrobe correctly, considering the significant seasonal weather fluctuations. In winter (from December to February), it is cold and dry here, with average temperatures dropping below freezing, especially at night. You will need warm clothes: a winter jacket or down coat, sweaters, thermal underwear, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Since there is practically no precipitation in winter, the focus should be on protection from the cold. Comfortable, warm shoes are also mandatory.
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are transitional seasons with more moderate but changeable temperatures. During these periods, the principle of layering works best. A light jacket, fleece top, jumpers, t-shirts, and shirts will allow you to feel comfortable with weather changes throughout the day. In spring and autumn, rainfall is low, but a light umbrella or raincoat may come in handy, especially in April, May, September, and October. Don't forget comfortable shoes for walking, as the weather at this time often invites exploring the city on foot.
Summer in Taiyuan (June-August) is warm, and at times hot. Daytime temperatures can reach +28°C. It is recommended to bring light, breathable clothing made of natural fabrics: t-shirts, shorts, skirts, and sundresses. July and August are the wettest months with the highest number of rainy days, so an umbrella or a light raincoat will be very useful. Also, do not forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for protection from the active summer sun. Regardless of the season, comfortable shoes are your main companion on the journey.
