The fastest way to find yourself amidst the mountains is to take a flight to Taxkorgan Khunqilafu Airport (HQL). This modern aviation hub handles aircraft in high-altitude conditions and is well-connected to the city, allowing tourists to save travel time.

An alternative option is flying to neighbouring Kashgar (KHG), located approximately 200 kilometres away. Many travellers choose this route to continue their journey by land and enjoy the views of the Karakoram Highway.

There is no railway station in Taxkorgan itself due to the complex mountainous terrain. Travellers preferring trains should aim for the nearest major transport hub — Kashgar.

Upon reaching the station in Kashgar, tourists typically transfer to buses or rent cars to cover the remaining distance to the highlands. This transport combination allows you to combine the comfort of rail travel with the scenic beauty of the mountain route.

Bus service is a popular and budget-friendly way to reach the destination, especially from the city of Kashgar. The route runs along picturesque roads, and the trip allows passengers to gradually acclimatise to the altitude gain while enjoying views of mountain lakes and peaks.

Although the exact schedule may change depending on the season and weather conditions, trips from regional centres usually depart regularly. It is recommended to verify departure times and ticket availability directly at bus stations before your planned trip.

Travelling by car is perhaps the most spectacular way to journey to this region. The main route leads from the city of Kashgar: the distance is about 290 km, and the travel time will take approximately 5.1 hours. The road is part of the legendary Karakoram Highway, known for its fantastic landscapes.

You can rent a car or use taxi services to have the opportunity to stop at beautiful locations along the way. Given the mountainous nature of the road and the altitude, drivers should be attentive, and passengers should be prepared for winding roads.

2. Clothing and Climate. Even in summer, it can be cool here, especially in the evenings. Bring layered clothing, a windproof jacket, and warm shoes. The sun in the mountains is very strong, so sunglasses and high SPF sunscreen are necessary.
