General Weather Overview

The climate of Weihai can be described as temperate, with four distinct seasons. The city experiences significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year: from cool, and sometimes frosty winters, to warm summers. The average annual temperature varies, ensuring diverse weather conditions for visitors during different times of the year.

Winter in Weihai (from December to February) is quite cold, with average temperatures around 0-2°C and relatively low rainfall. Spring (from March to May) brings a gradual warming, with the air heating up to a comfortable 16-19°C by May. Summer (from June to August) is the warmest season, with average temperatures reaching 25-26°C, particularly in July and August. The summer months also see the highest amount of rainfall, with an increase in rainy days, making this period more humid. Autumn (from September to November) is characterised by a gradual drop in temperature and reduced rainfall, offering pleasantly cool weather.

Temperature

Weihai experiences noticeable seasonal temperature fluctuations. The coldest month is usually January, when the average temperature is around 0.5°C, with nighttime lows potentially dropping to -1.5°C, and daytime highs barely reaching 2.5°C. February also remains cold, with an average temperature of 1.2°C. Conversely, the hottest months are July and August. In August, the average temperature peaks at 25.9°C, with daytime highs up to 27.7°C and nighttime lows around 24.0°C. Thus, the annual range of average temperatures extends from near-freezing marks in winter to a comfortable +26°C in summer.

The summer period in Weihai, from June to August, is characterised by warm weather. In June, the average temperature is 21.6°C, gradually rising towards August. Daytime temperatures at the height of summer (July-August) remain steady in the 27-28°C range, while nighttime temperatures rarely drop below 23-24°C. This creates a sensation of consistently warm weather. Given that July and August account for the highest amount of rainfall and rainy days, summer can feel quite humid.

The winter months, from December to February, bring cool weather and occasionally light frosts to Weihai. Average temperatures range from 0.5°C in January to 2.4°C in December. At night, the thermometer can drop below freezing, especially in January (down to -1.5°C), while during the day the temperature usually stays slightly above the freezing mark, rarely rising above 4.5°C in December or 2.5°C in January. Diurnal temperature fluctuations throughout the year are not significant: the difference between the average minimum and average maximum temperature is usually about 4-5°C, indicating relatively stable temperature conditions throughout the day and night for each specific season.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Weihai is distributed unevenly throughout the year, with a clearly defined period of higher humidity in summer and drier conditions during the other seasons. Although the absolute values of monthly precipitation are low, the difference between the wettest and driest periods is noticeable both in terms of the amount of rainfall and the number of days with precipitation.

The highest amount of precipitation occurs during the summer months, especially July and August. These months see 5 mm of rainfall each, which is the peak for Weihai. August also stands out with the highest number of days with precipitation – on average 13 days, while July has about 11. June is also a relatively wet month with 3 mm of rainfall and 7 rainy days. Summer precipitation is likely characterised by frequent but not particularly heavy rains, given the total amount of moisture.

The majority of the year, from autumn to spring, is characterised by minimal precipitation. From October to April (with the exception of May with 2 mm), only 1 mm of moisture falls monthly. The "driest" month in terms of days with precipitation is March – with just 3 days. During the winter months – December, January, and February – with average temperatures close to freezing or dropping below, this small amount of precipitation (1 mm over 5-7 "wet" days) may fall as light snow or drizzle. September is a transitional month with 2 mm of precipitation and approximately 6 rainy days.

What to Pack

When packing your suitcase for a trip to Weihai, it is important to consider the distinct change of seasons. The climate here is temperate, but with noticeable fluctuations in temperature and precipitation throughout the year, so your wardrobe should be adapted to the specific time of your visit. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes will be your faithful companion, as Weihai is perfect for walking.

If your trip falls during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn (May-September), when average temperatures range from 16°C to 26°C, opt for light and breathable clothing. T-shirts, shorts, skirts, and light trousers will be very useful. Especially during the summer months (July-August), when the highest rainfall (up to 5 mm) and rainy days (up to 13) are observed, do not forget to bring an umbrella or a light raincoat. Sunscreen and a hat for sun protection will also come in handy, especially if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors.

For travelling during the cooler months, from late autumn to early spring (October-April), when temperatures can drop to 0°C and below (especially in January and February), the key principle is layering. Bring warm sweaters, fleece jackets, thermal underwear, as well as windproof and water-repellent outerwear, since despite the low amount of precipitation (1 mm), light snow or drizzle is possible during the winter months. A hat, gloves, and a scarf will also be useful, especially for evening walks. Even in the transitional seasons, when the weather can be changeable, several layers of clothing will allow you to feel comfortable throughout the day.
