How to get to Ercan

How to get to nearby cities

Getting There: Introduction

Ercan is a key transport hub for the northern part of the island, attracting travellers with its accessibility and proximity to the region's main historical monuments. Situated on a picturesque plain, the city serves as an excellent starting point for those wishing to explore sunny beaches, ancient ruins, and colourful eastern bazaars. You can reach Ercan in various ways: by a direct flight, by car from neighbouring districts, or by using local bus routes.

By Plane

The primary method of reaching the region by air is via the international Ercan Airport (ECN). This modern terminal, handling a passenger flow of over 4 million people annually, receives flights from many countries (predominantly with a transit connection in Turkey) and is conveniently located relative to the city centre.

If a direct flight is not suitable, you may consider alternative routes through neighbouring cities. The closest option is Larnaca (just 28 km away), from where it is easy to arrive via taxi or transfer. Arrivals into Paphos (107 km) or even the Turkish city of Alanya are also popular, although the latter option will require more complex logistics.

By Train

Travellers should be aware that railway services in Ercan, as on the entire island, are completely absent. Trains have not run here for many decades, so planning a trip by rail is not feasible.

Those arriving in nearby cities, such as Larnaca or Paphos, will need to use alternative modes of transport. To move between cities, intercity buses or car rentals are the best options.

The city has no major railway stations. Nearest cities with rail connections:

By Bus

Although detailed information on specific intercity schedules is not currently provided, bus services in the region are quite well developed. The main mode of transport for tourists is the KIBHAS shuttles, which operate between the airport and major cities (Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta, Güzelyurt).

Travelling by bus is an economical and reliable option to reach your destination. The distance to the main resorts is short, so travel time usually ranges from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic and the final stop.

By Car

Travelling by car is one of the most convenient ways to reach the city, allowing you to be independent of public transport schedules. The fastest route runs from the city of Larnaca: the distance is about 56 km, and the journey will take approximately 1 hour 10 minutes. This is the most popular choice for those arriving on the southern coast.

If you are departing from the city of Paphos, the journey will be longer—about 182 km, which will take approximately 2.5 hours. For travellers planning a complex route from the mainland (for example, via ferry crossings and then from the city of Alanya), the path will exceed 230 km and take more than 5 hours.

Tips for Travellers

To ensure your trip to Ercan is as comfortable as possible and leaves only pleasant impressions, we have prepared a list of useful recommendations. This region is known for its hospitality, but it has its own characteristics that are better known in advance.

  1. Clothing and Essentials. Summers here are very hot, so bring light clothing made of natural fabrics, a head covering, and sunscreen. Winters are mild but windy—a windproof jacket and comfortable shoes will be useful.
  2. Transport. Public transport does not cover all areas, so for freedom of movement, it is better to rent a car. Remember that traffic here drives on the left side.
  3. Finances. The main currency is the Turkish Lira, but Euros, US Dollars, and Pounds Sterling are accepted in many tourist spots. Cards work in large shops, but it is better to carry cash for markets and small stalls.
  4. Health and Safety. Pharmacies (Eczane) are well-stocked, and many pharmacists speak English. Drinking tap water is not recommended; it is better to purchase bottled water.
  5. Communication. The official language is Turkish, but English is widely spoken in the tourism sector. Signs are often bilingual.
  6. Local Etiquette. The locals are very friendly. When entering a mosque, please ensure you remove your shoes, and women should cover their heads with a scarf.
  7. What to Avoid. It is categorically forbidden to photograph military facilities and zones marked with special signs. This is strictly controlled.
  8. Additional Tip. Be sure to try the local grilled hellim (halloumi) cheese—it is the hallmark of the local cuisine.

Observing these simple rules will help you avoid awkward situations and fully immerse yourself in the holiday atmosphere.
