What to Do

A visit to this center is always an opportunity to be part of a major event. Depending on the schedule, you might catch concerts by international stars, exciting boxing matches, or famous theatrical productions. A particular point of pride for the center is its theater hall, whose stage is an exact replica of the Royal Danish Theatre stage, allowing audiences in Herning to enjoy top-tier national productions.

If you are visiting for business, modern conference rooms of various capacities are at your service — from the cozy Auditorium for 440 people to a giant hall with 2,400 seats for large-scale parties and presentations. Between sessions, you can relax in informal networking areas or hold a meeting in the local bistro. For fans of industrial tourism, exhibitions like Scandinavia's largest technology fair, HI Tech & Industry, will be a real discovery.

Don't miss the chance to stop by the local restaurants and bistros, where you can sample Danish cuisine during breaks in the cultural program. Many visitors also combine a trip to the congress center with visits to other MCH Group facilities, such as sports matches at the MCH Arena or grand shows at Jyske Bank Boxen, creating a full day of entertainment.

Getting There

Getting to this cultural and business hub is easy, as it is located at Østergade 37, right in the heart of the city. If you are traveling by car, there is a spacious free parking lot with 1,000 spaces, which is a rarity for central areas. From Billund International Airport (BLL), the drive takes about an hour via the E45 motorway.

For those who prefer public transport, the train is an ideal option. Herning Station is located just a 5–10 minute leisurely walk from the center. The city is well-connected by regular services from Copenhagen and Aarhus. You can also use taxis or local buses that run between the main MCH Group sites, such as the arena and the stadium.

Many tourists prefer to get around the city on foot or by rented bicycles, as most key hotels and restaurants are in close proximity to the congress center. This eco-friendly and active way of moving around will allow you to better experience the atmosphere of this cozy Danish city.

History & Facts

The history of this iconic venue began on May 20, 1954, when the first Herning Hallen hall with an area of 1,600 m² opened in Herning. The idea for creating a large-scale venue was proposed by Christian Madsen as early as 1944, and its first tenant was a textile fair, highlighting the city's status as the textile capital of the region.

Demand for exhibition space grew so rapidly that the complex began expanding as early as the 1960s. A significant milestone was 1963, when King Frederik IX officially opened the new halls on Vardevej. However, it was the building in the city center that remained the soul of the complex. In 1986, it underwent a massive 100-million-krone renovation, which was opened by Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik.

Interestingly, during the renovation, the theater hall was designed so that its stage exactly matched the dimensions of the main stage of the Royal Danish Theatre. This technical solution made it possible to host national ballet and opera tours here without changing the sets. Today, this center remains one of the most visited in Scandinavia, hosting world stars of the caliber of Beyoncé and major industrial exhibitions.

Time Needed

The time you spend within the complex largely depends on the purpose of your visit. If you are coming for an introductory tour or just want to appreciate the architecture and visit the local bistro, 1–2 hours will be sufficient. This is enough time to see the main halls and feel the scale of the facility.

For those attending a specific event — whether it's a concert by a world star, a theatrical production, or an industry exhibition — you should reserve between 3 and 5 hours. Factor in time for security checks, the cloakroom, and a possible dinner at one of the center's restaurants. If your goal is to cover all MCH Group facilities, including the exhibition pavilions and the arena, it's best to set aside a full day for your visit.
