The name of the site translates as "apparatus factory," which is a direct reference to its historical purpose. The transformation of old industrial workshops into a multifunctional space has allowed for the creation of a unique ecosystem here. Art galleries, design studios, workshops, and conceptual cafes all coexist under one roof.

Aparaaditehas is not just a shopping center or an exhibition hall, but a living community that has contributed to the revival of an entire neighborhood. For travelers, it is an essential stop on the itinerary, offering a look at the unconventional yet incredibly stylish and vibrant side of urban culture.

What to Do

Visiting this place is a real quest for lovers of aesthetics and creativity. Be sure to stop by the Kogo and Ajuokse galleries to discover the works of contemporary Estonian artists, or head up to the TYPA balcony gallery. One of the main gems of the complex is the TYPA Print and Paper Museum, where you can not only see antique printing presses but also participate in the process of creating unique items.

For those looking for unusual items, there are boutiques of Estonian designers and workshops in Aparaaditehas, and on weekends, the famous Müürilille flea market is sometimes held here. If you want to relax in an unusual setting, there is a sauna and garden located right on the roof of the building, offering an industrial view of the surroundings.

The gastronomic part of the quarter deserves special attention. Some of the city's trendiest spots are located here, including the popular restaurant Aparaat, known for its bohemian atmosphere and excellent cuisine. You can also check out the Gutenberg club or spend time in the cozy "Backstage Living Room" (Elutuba Lava Taga).

Getting There

Getting to this creative quarter from the city center is easy. Aparaaditehas is located just 1.5 km from the central bus station and 1.6 km from Town Hall Square. If you arrive in the city by train, the walk from the railway station will take no more than 10–12 minutes (a distance of about 750 meters).

For those who prefer public transport, the Pauluse stop is located right in front of the complex. City buses numbers 1, 2, 8, 10, 11, and 12 stop here. Notably, even Lux Express intercity buses coming from Tallinn stop here before reaching the main bus station.

If you enjoy an active lifestyle, the quarter is easily accessible by bicycle or rented electric scooter—one of the most popular ways for locals to get around. A taxi ride from the central square takes literally 5 minutes.

History & Facts

The past of this place is shrouded in a veil of industrial secrecy. During the Soviet years, the factory specialized in producing complex cooling equipment and parts for submarines. Interestingly, for the purposes of disinformation and camouflaging its main activities, the enterprise also produced quite mundane, yet often non-functional items, such as umbrellas and zippers.

A new chapter in the history of the complex began in 2006 when the old workshops were purchased by ABC Kinnisvarateenuste OÜ. However, the real cultural blossoming began in 2014: that was when the abandoned industrial spaces started transforming into a "culture factory," filling up with artist studios and cozy cafes.

In 2021, the factory passed into the ownership of Kultuuritehased OÜ, which continued to develop the concept of a multifunctional urban space. The development of the territory continues today: quite recently, in 2024, the complex expanded by acquiring nearby old garage buildings, opening up even more opportunities for creative initiatives.

Time Needed

To take a leisurely stroll through the grounds, peek into a few designer shops, and take atmospheric photos against the industrial walls, you will need about 2 hours. This is quite enough for a brief introduction to the main concept of the place.

However, if you plan to visit the TYPA Museum, spend time viewing the exhibitions in the art galleries, or decide to stay for lunch at one of the local restaurants, it is better to allow 3 to 4 hours for your visit. The atmosphere here encourages you to take your time and enjoy the moment over a cup of coffee.
