In the eastern part of the Trade Side, for which ancient Veliky Novgorod is famous, stands the majestic Znamensky Cathedral. This outstanding architectural monument of the late 17th century was built specifically to house one of the main Orthodox relics revered throughout Russia—the miraculous icon of "Our Lady of the Sign".

The cathedral stands out against the backdrop of Novgorod's characteristically simple churches with its rich decoration. Built in the traditions of Central Russian architecture, it combines features of Moscow and Yaroslavl styles: five powerful domes, elegant tiled belts, and two-story galleries create a grand and ornate appearance. Today, the building is an important branch of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve.
One of the most remarkable features of Znamensky Cathedral is its exterior and interior wall paintings. The subjects decorating the facades and the monumental frescoes inside the church transform it into a veritable open-air art gallery. Thanks to its unique acoustics, the cathedral's walls are often filled with the sounds of choral singing, creating a unique atmosphere for visitors.
