Pokrovskaya Bashnya

About

This grand structure, towering over the banks of the Velikaya River, is considered one of the most impressive monuments of military defensive architecture in Russia. The Pokrovskaya Tower is a true giant among European fortifications: its base diameter is about 28 meters, and its total height, including the wooden spire, reaches almost 40 meters. It is a key element of the Okolny Town in the ancient city of Pskov.

The uniqueness of this structure lies in its oval shape and the incredible thickness of its walls, which reach 6 meters at the base. The tower was designed to protrude beyond the line of the fortress walls, allowing defenders to direct effective flanking fire at the enemy. It once housed the powerful Randomyshskaya squeaker (cannon), weighing about 4.5 tons, which underscored the site's strategic importance.

Today, the Pokrovskaya Tower is not only a historical monument of federal significance but also an iconic spot for walks. In its lower tier, carved directly into the rock, traces of ancient underground galleries remain, while the wooden tent roof, restored in 2010, has returned the structure to its historical appearance, attracting thousands of travelers with its rugged beauty.

What to Do

When visiting this site, be sure to take time to explore the tower's multi-tiered structure. Inside, you can see the battle tiers, massive staircases, and the system of embrasures that once served to protect the city. Of particular interest are the underground galleries (listening tunnels), carved directly into the rock, which vividly demonstrate the engineering ingenuity of ancient masters.

A walk around the tower's grounds offers a chance to appreciate the scale of the Petrine Bastions and the surviving earthen ramparts. These fortifications, built by order of the first Russian emperor, are still clearly visible in the landscape. The upper platform and adjacent walls offer magnificent panoramic views of the Velikaya River, making it an ideal spot for landscape photography enthusiasts.

Many visitors choose the Pokrovsky complex for quiet walking tours. Adjacent to the tower is the historical ensemble of a former monastery, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and immersion in the past. Thanks to its high rating among tourists, this place is recognized as one of the best locations to experience the scale and power of the Pskov fortress.

Getting There

Finding this monumental site is easy: it is located in the southwestern part of Okolny Town, right on the picturesque banks of the Velikaya River. If you are staying in the center, a walk to the site will take about 15–20 minutes. The path along the embankment or through the ancient streets of Pskov will allow you to get into a historical mood even before arriving at your destination.

For those who prefer public transport, buses and shuttle taxis going to the "Okolny Gorod" or "Muzey-Zapovednik" stops are suitable. From the railway station, it is convenient to take buses No. 1, No. 2, or No. 3 — the trip will take no more than half an hour. If you are arriving from the airport, the fastest way is by taxi, which will take you to the fortress walls in 20–30 minutes.

History & Facts

The history of this fortification giant began back in 1465 when a wooden wall was built around the city in just one week. Later, in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, Pskov masters replaced the wood with stone, creating one of the most powerful defensive systems of its time. The architecture reached its peak in the 17th century when the tower acquired its final, imposing appearance.

The most heroic episode in the building's history was the famous Siege of Pskov by Stephen Bathory in 1581. It was this section that bore the main brunt of the enemy artillery. Despite serious damage, the defenders held out, and the tower itself was subsequently carefully restored and modernized, as confirmed by detailed 17th-century records mentioning numerous battle tiers and a tall tent roof.

A new stage began during the era of Peter I, when the fortress was prepared for the Great Northern War in 1701–1702. By the Emperor's decree, the towers were filled with earth to create bastions, and a massive rampart for heavy cannons was built in front of the walls. The current appearance of the site is the result of meticulous restoration work; in particular, the majestic wooden tent roof was recreated in 2010 after a devastating fire that occurred at the end of the last century.

Time Needed

To leisurely inspect the tower itself, explore the adjacent earthen ramparts, and enjoy the panorama of the Velikaya River, 1–2 hours is usually enough. This time is sufficient to take atmospheric photos and briefly look over the information stands.

If you plan to book a detailed tour, go down into the archaeological excavations, or explore every tier of the fortification in detail, you should budget about 3 hours. Also, consider the time for a walk through Okolny Town, as a comprehensive walk along the fortress walls can take up the entire morning.

Working Hours

The Pokrovskaya Tower welcomes visitors daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. This schedule is in effect throughout the week, including weekends, making the site accessible for those visiting the city for a short weekend break.

Since the tower is part of a museum union, access times to the inner tiers or special exhibitions may change depending on the season or ongoing restoration work. We strongly recommend checking the information on the official website before planning your visit.
