How to get to Kemi

The fastest way to reach the region is to take a flight to the local Kemi-Tornio (KEM) airport, which is located just a few kilometres from the city. This air hub is well connected to the country's transport system, ensuring a convenient arrival for tourists.

Alternatively, you can consider flying into neighbouring major cities: Oulu (91 km) or Rovaniemi (101 km). Travellers also have the option of arriving via the Swedish city of Luleå, located approximately 112 km away, from where the journey can continue by ground transport.

Rail travel is one of the most comfortable ways to get to Kemi, as the city has its own railway station. Trains operated by the state company VR arrive here regularly, travelling from Helsinki and other southern cities northwards towards Lapland.

If direct tickets are unavailable, a convenient option is a journey with a transfer at major hub stations such as Oulu or Rovaniemi. Travelling by train allows you to enjoy views of Finnish nature and arrive directly within the city limits.

There is also a route from the Swedish city of Luleå (about 164 km); however, it is worth noting that travel time can vary significantly and be lengthy due to transfers or border crossings. Buses are an excellent choice for those wishing to save money and admire the northern landscapes from the window.

Travelling by car provides maximum flexibility and is the quickest way to reach your destination. The drive from Oulu or Rovaniemi will take just about 1.4 hours, as the distance is slightly over 100 km on high-quality roads.

If you are heading from the Swedish side, the route from Luleå, approximately 158 km long, will require about 1.9 hours. Taxis are also available for intercity trips, but renting a car often proves to be a more economical solution for exploring the region.
