Imagine a mighty granite ring that has reliably guarded the peace of an ancient city for centuries. The City Walls of Guérande (Les Remparts de Guérande) are some of the most impressive and well-preserved medieval fortifications France has to offer. Located near the resort town of La Baule-Escoublac, these 1,300-meter-long walls are a living testament to the military power of the Dukes of Brittany.

This fortress is striking in its completeness: 6 towers and 4 monumental gates have been preserved, among which the majestic Porte Saint-Michel particularly stands out. Strolling along the curtains and machicolations, you can notice how the fortress evolved alongside the development of artillery, transforming narrow arrow slits into full-fledged cannon ports.
An interesting feature of the monument is not only its architecture but also its ecological significance. Thanks to a special agreement with environmentalists, more than 70 pairs of Common Swifts nest in the niches of the ancient masonry every year, adding a living charm to the stern granite. Today, this place is a true portal to the past, where every stone breathes history.
