In the quiet German city of Ratingen lies a true monument to the Industrial Revolution. The LVR Industrial Museum — Cromford Textile Mill is not just a museum, but the first mechanized cotton spinning mill in continental Europe, built back in 1783. Founded by entrepreneur Johann Gottfried Brügelmann, it became a symbol of technical breakthrough in Germany.

The museum complex is remarkably well-preserved. Visitors can see the legendary five-story "High Factory" (Hohe Fabrik) and the luxurious late Baroque manor house where the industrialist's family lived. This site is unique as it showcases the complete cycle of cotton processing: from raw material to the finest yarn, all created on restored 18th-century looms.
The main highlight of Cromford is its working machinery. A massive water wheel still powers exact replicas of Richard Arkwright's historic machines, allowing guests to witness firsthand how modern industry was born. It is a fascinating journey through time, where the clatter of looms and the scent of cotton recreate the atmosphere of the early factory age.
