Weather in Puerto Barrios

Located on the Caribbean coast, Puerto Barrios welcomes travellers with a hot tropical climate. The weather here remains warm throughout the year, making the city accessible for visits in any season; however, it is worth considering the high humidity characteristic of this region of Guatemala.

Temperature indicators are quite stable. The hottest months are considered to be April and May, when the air warms up to an average of +28°C, and daytime highs often exceed +32°C. Even in the "coolest" months—December and January—the average temperature holds at a comfortable level of around +23°C, rarely dropping below +20°C at night.

A specific feature of the local climate is the significant number of cloudy and humid days. According to statistics, rainfall is a frequent occurrence here, especially during the period from June to October, when the number of rainy days can reach 30 per month. Travellers are recommended to always have an umbrella or raincoat with them, as tropical downpours can be sudden but are often quickly replaced by sunshine.

Puerto Barrios is a lively port city in eastern Guatemala, situated in the picturesque Amatique Bay. As the administrative centre of the Izabal department, it serves as the country's main maritime gateway to the Caribbean. A distinct atmosphere prevails here, strikingly different from the cool highland regions: the rhythm of life is set by active maritime trade and a relaxed tropical lifestyle characteristic of the coast.

For many travellers, this city becomes an important transit hub. It is from here that boats depart for the vibrant Livingston, where one can explore the unique culture of the Garifuna people, as well as boats to neighbouring Belize. Nature lovers should pay attention to the surroundings: nearby lies the Punta de Manabique nature reserve, known for its dense mangrove forests and rich biodiversity.

The climate in Puerto Barrios is distinguished by enviable stability and warmth, typical of the country's tropical coast. Comfortable weather reigns here throughout the year, but the highest temperatures are recorded in May, which can be called the hottest month: average figures reach 28.4°C, and the daytime maximum often exceeds 32°C. December and January are considered the "coolest" period, yet even at this time, the average temperature stays at a pleasant 23.4°C.

The summer season and the beginning of autumn bring noticeable heat. From April to September, the air consistently warms up to 30–31°C during the day. Winter in the traditional sense is absent here: it is rather a period of mild warmth, when daytime temperatures are a comfortable 26–27°C. This time is excellent for those who wish to avoid exhausting heat while still enjoying the Guatemalan sun.

Daily temperature fluctuations in the region are moderate but perceptible, bringing freshness in the evening hours. The difference between the daytime maximum and nighttime minimum is usually about 6–8 degrees. For instance, even in the hottest spring months, the night temperature drops to 23–24°C, and in winter, nights are around 20°C, creating ideal conditions for rest and sleep.

When setting off for Puerto Barrios, it is worth preparing in advance for the humid tropical climate. Rainfall here is a frequent and familiar phenomenon throughout the year, so a reliable umbrella or raincoat will become your main companions on the journey. Even during periods of relative calm, it may rain practically every other day.

The wettest season lasts from the beginning of summer to mid-autumn. From June to October, the number of rainy days reaches its peak: for example, in July, statistics record precipitation almost daily (up to 30 days a month). During this period, rains are often prolonged, creating high air humidity.

A relatively dry period falls in the spring. March and April are considered the time with the least amount of precipitation, when the number of rainy days decreases to 15–16 per month. However, it is worth remembering that November, despite a slight decrease in the frequency of rains compared to summer, is often distinguished by the highest volume of falling moisture.

When travelling to Puerto Barrios, one should plan for a hot and humid tropical climate. The basis of your wardrobe should be light clothing made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen, which will help you tolerate heat reaching 30°C and above more easily. Since even in the winter months the temperature at night rarely drops below 20°C, you will not need heavy warm items, but a light cardigan or long-sleeved shirt will be useful for protection against the sea breeze or air conditioning in transport.

Pay special attention to protection against precipitation: according to statistics, rainy days happen here very often, especially in the period from June to October. A high-quality raincoat or waterproof windbreaker will be much more practical than an umbrella, and quick-drying clothes will be a real salvation in high humidity. Footwear should be comfortable and reliable: take closed sneakers for long walks and sandals that are water-resistant.

Do not forget to put sunscreen with a high SPF factor, a hat, and sunglasses in your suitcase, as the sun in Guatemala can be very active. It is also strongly recommended to carry insect repellents, as insect activity increases in damp weather. The principle of layering in clothing will allow you to feel comfortable in any situation, whether it is a hot afternoon or a rainy evening.
