General weather conditions

The climate of Diu can be described as mild tropical, heavily influenced by its proximity to the Arabian Sea. The weather here remains warm year-round, without sharp temperature fluctuations or extreme cold. Average thermometer readings vary from a comfortable +22°C in the winter months to a hot +30°C in May, making this resort attractive to visit at almost any time.

Dry and wet seasons are clearly distinguished during the year. From October to May, rain is a rarity here, and tourists can expect long sunny days. Winter (from December to February) is considered the most favourable time for travel: during this period, ideal weather sets in with moderate humidity and pleasant warmth, when daytime temperatures rarely exceed +27...29°C.

With the arrival of June, the picture changes: the monsoon season begins, lasting until September. During these months, the number of rainy days increases sharply, peaking in July and August. Despite high cloud cover and frequent precipitation, the air remains warm. Travellers planning a trip in summer should be prepared for frequent rains, which, however, bring freshness and revive the local nature.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Diu is characterised by stability and warmth throughout the year, though it has distinct seasonal peaks. The hottest period is the spring months, especially April and May, when the average temperature holds at 30°C, and daytime highs regularly reach 33–34°C. The heat is felt most acutely at this time, as even the nights do not bring significant relief, remaining warm with readings around 25–27°C.

With the arrival of the summer monsoons, the character of the weather changes. Although the average temperature in July and August drops slightly to 27–28°C, the main feature becomes the minimal difference between day and night readings. At the height of the rainy season, the temperature difference over 24 hours is practically erased, amounting to just 2–3 degrees (for example, from 26°C at night to 29°C during the day), creating an atmosphere of constant, humid tropical heat without sharp fluctuations.

The winter period, lasting from December to February, brings the most comfortable conditions for travellers. The weather becomes mild and pleasant: the exhausting heat retreats, giving way to sunny days with a comfortable 27–29°C. The "coldest" month is considered to be January, when the night temperature can drop to 18°C. Such evenings offer a refreshing coolness, ideal for walks, while there is no question of actual cold in this region.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Diu is distributed extremely unevenly throughout the year, forming two distinct seasons: a long dry period and the monsoon season. If you prefer cloudless skies, the ideal time for a visit would be the winter and spring months. From January to April, as well as in November and December, rain here is extremely rare. Statistics show that in these months precipitation is practically zero, guaranteeing excellent conditions for beach holidays and excursions.

The situation changes with the arrival of summer. June marks the beginning of the wet season, which reaches its peak in mid-summer. The "wettest" months are July and August. At this time, an umbrella will become your mandatory companion: in July, an average of about 29 rainy days is recorded, and in August — about 27. This means that precipitation falls almost daily, bringing freshness but also limiting opportunities for open-air walks.

By September, the intensity of the rains begins to decrease, although the weather still remains quite humid (about 17 days with precipitation). October serves as a transition month, when the number of rainy days drops sharply to four, preparing the region for the dry winter season. Thus, when planning a trip to Diu, it is important to consider this contrast: absolute dryness in winter and frequent rains in the summer months.

What to pack

When packing for Diu, give preference to light and loose clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. The weather here is predominantly warm year-round: even in the coolest months (December and January), the temperature rarely drops below 18°C, and during the day it stays around a comfortable 22-24°C. For winter evenings and morning walks along the coast, when a fresh breeze may blow from the sea, it is worth bringing a light jumper, cardigan, or windbreaker, but you certainly won't need warm jackets.

If your trip falls during the period from June to September, be prepared for high humidity and regular rainfall — statistics show up to 29 rainy days in July. At this time, be sure to pack an umbrella or a compact raincoat in your suitcase, as well as quick-drying clothes. Footwear in this season should be practical and waterproof, for example, high-quality rubber sandals that do not slip and are easy to wash.

Regardless of the season, do not forget reliable sun protection: sunscreen with high SPF, dark sunglasses, and a hat are essential, as the sun in this region of India is very active, especially in April and May. For exploring the fort and city attractions, comfortable walking shoes (trainers or canvas shoes) will be required, and for relaxing on the famous beaches, be sure to bring swimwear.
