The spacious enclosures are also home to long-necked giraffes, playful monkeys, and many other exotic mammals that are particularly interesting to observe during the morning hours.

Bird enthusiasts should definitely visit the bird pond, which is home to both local and migratory species. Equally fascinating is a visit to the aquarium and specialized reptile zones, where you can get to know the scaly inhabitants of the region. Information stands located throughout the park provide plenty of curious facts about the biology and habits of each species.

For those seeking a relaxing break, the zoo offers well-maintained walking paths and picnic areas where you can catch your breath surrounded by greenery. On weekends, educational programs and guided tours are often held to explain the importance of ecosystem conservation, making a visit both enjoyable and informative for guests of all ages.

Getting There

Alipore Zoo is conveniently located in the southern part of the city in the neighborhood of the same name, making it easy to reach. If you are arriving via Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU), the journey to the zoo is about 25 kilometers. A trip by taxi or through Uber/Ola services will take approximately 45–60 minutes, depending on traffic density.

For those who prefer public transport, the nearest major point is the Rabindra Sadan metro station (Blue Line). From there, you can quickly reach the zoo gates by taxi or local bus. From the main railway stations—Howrah or Sealdah—the distance is only 6–8 kilometers, making a trip by yellow taxi quite affordable and fast.

Numerous city buses stop near the entrance (at the Alipore Zoo stop), including routes No. 12, 18, 55, 94, and 224. If you are nearby, for example, at the National Library, the walk will take no more than 10–15 minutes. Parking is also available on-site for those traveling by car.

History & Facts

The history of this place is remarkable, with roots stretching back to the early 19th century. Alipore Zoo owes its origins to a private menagerie established in 1800 on his estate by Arthur Wellesley, who served as the Governor-General of Bengal. Over time, this personal animal collection became the foundation for a future public park.

The official initiative to create a full-fledged zoological garden was put forward in 1873 by Lieutenant-Governor Richard Temple. He successfully persuaded local authorities to allocate a vast plot of land for this purpose. Consequently, in 1876 (though some records suggest the first visitors entered in 1875), the zoo officially opened its doors to the general public, becoming one of the pioneers in India.

Over its 140-plus years of existence, the zoo has evolved from a colonial-era attraction into a serious scientific institution. It has continuously developed, expanding its enclosures and improving animal welfare methods. Today, it is not just a historical landmark but a living monument to nature conservation, preserving the atmosphere of old Kolkata.

Interestingly, for decades, the zoo served as an important center for studying exotic fauna, attracting researchers from all over the world. Its historical architecture and centuries-old trees provide a unique backdrop for modern scientific work on species preservation.

Time Needed

To take a leisurely stroll through the shady alleys and carefully observe all the inhabitants, a typical visitor will need about 3–4 hours. This is usually enough time to see the main enclosures, visit the aquarium, and soak in the park's atmosphere.

If you are planning a visit with the whole family, especially with young children, we recommend setting aside up to 5 hours. The extra time will allow for rest breaks in the shade, snacks in designated areas, and a more detailed study of the information boards at key exhibits without any rush.

Working Hours

Alipore Zoo is open to visitors daily, making it easy to include in any travel itinerary. The gates of the zoological garden swing open every morning and close at the end of the business day:

  • Monday — Sunday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Please note that last entry to the park is usually permitted 30 minutes before closing. It is also worth considering that during the monsoon season, the schedule may be slightly adjusted depending on weather conditions.
