Getting There

Freedom Fighters Park is located in the very heart of the city on Band Road, right next to the scenic Kirtankhola River. Thanks to its central location, reaching it from any part of the city is quite easy. The most popular and atmospheric way to get around here is by cycle-rickshaw, which will take you to the park gates in just a few minutes.

As Barisal is the country's largest river port, many travelers arrive here by ferry or boat from Dhaka (the journey takes about 6–8 hours). If you prefer air travel, the city has an airport, from which you can reach the park by taxi in approximately 10–15 minutes.

For precise navigation, travelers often use Google Maps, looking for its proximity to the waterfront. The park is easy to recognize by its well-kept green alleys and the lively atmosphere typical of the city's cultural heart.

History & Facts

The history of this green zone dates back to the late 19th century. The park was established in 1896 during the tenure of British Magistrate N.D. Beatson-Bell. It was originally created to honor the visit of Sir Alexander Mackenzie, the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, and for a long time, it bore Beatson-Bell's name in recognition of his contributions to local medicine and education.

For decades, the park remained the primary venue for public gatherings, sporting events, and cultural celebrations. In 1996, it was officially renamed Bangabandhu Udyan to commemorate the 1972 visit of the nation's leader, when a memorial stage was erected here.

The park took on its modern appearance following a major renovation in 2011. New walking paths were laid, thousands of flowers were planted, and modern lighting was installed. Today, the site harmoniously combines its colonial heritage with its contemporary role as the center of the city's cultural life.

Time Needed

To take a leisurely stroll through the alleys, admire the lake views, and snap some memorable photos, 1–2 hours is usually sufficient. This time allows you to walk around the entire area and soak in the park's tranquil atmosphere.

If you plan to have a small picnic on the grass or want to watch the local sports matches frequently held on the grounds, you should budget an additional hour in your schedule. The evening hours are particularly conducive to a longer stay, thanks to the pleasant lighting and the cool breeze from the water.
