The museum's architecture is impressive for its Indo-Saracenic style, where majestic domes and delicate ornaments harmonize with the surrounding Mughal gardens. The palace, built over a century ago, is flanked by two peaceful ponds that create an atmosphere of tranquility and royal grandeur right in the middle of the bustling city.

Inside the museum, a rich collection of artifacts awaits guests: from ancient sculptures and everyday items of indigenous tribes to the luxurious regalia of the Manikya dynasty. History & Facts

The majestic building that houses the museum today was constructed in 1901 by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya. Ujjayanta Palace served as the official residence of the rulers and became a striking symbol of the Indo-Saracenic architectural style, blending Eastern luxury with the elegant lines of Mughal design.

The history of this place is inextricably linked to the Manikya dynasty, which ruled the region for many centuries. Moving the capital to the new Agartala in the 19th century marked a new era for the kingdom, and today the museum carefully preserves the memory of 179 rulers whose roots, according to legend, trace back to the heroes of the ancient epic "Mahabharata".

In 2013, the palace officially changed its status, transforming from a government building into the state's largest museum. This decision opened up access to unique cultural treasures for the general public, making history accessible to every traveler in India.

Time Needed

To explore all the halls at a leisurely pace and enjoy the architecture, it is recommended to set aside 2 to 3 hours. This is sufficient time to see the main exhibition and take a walk around the grounds.

Usually, about 1.5 hours are spent exploring the indoor galleries with artifacts, while the remaining time is perfect for relaxing by the palace ponds and contemplating the Mughal gardens. If you are a photography enthusiast, allow a little more time to capture the unique details of the palace facade.
