The lake has a characteristic pear shape. On the eastern side, it is framed by a stone dam, which not only regulates the water level, especially during the monsoon season, but also serves as a popular place for walks. From here, magnificent views of the water surface and the surrounding landscapes open up, making it an ideal place for evening relaxation and taking beautiful photos at sunset.

Fateh Sagar is the second-largest lake in Udaipur, but its significance is not limited to water supply. There are three small islands on the lake, adding to its charm. The most famous of these is the island with the Nehru Garden, a popular spot for picnics and leisurely rest. Another island houses a public park with a fountain, while the third is home to the Udaipur Solar Observatory. A visit to Fateh Sagar Lake allows you not only to enjoy nature but also to discover interesting sites located right on its territory.

History & Facts

The history of Fateh Sagar Lake, one of the gems of Udaipur, dates back to the 17th century. This artificial body of water was first created in 1678 by order of Maharana Jai Singh. Initially, its main purpose was not to create a scenic landscape, but a purely practical task—providing the region with water for irrigation. This irrigation system functioned successfully for nearly two centuries.

However, the original dam could not withstand the forces of nature and was destroyed by a massive flood. A new chapter in the lake's history began in 1889, when Maharana Fateh Singh, the ruler of Mewar, initiated a large-scale project for its restoration and expansion. In honor of the visit to India by the Duke of Connaught, the son of British Queen Victoria, the new sturdy dam was named Connaught Dam. Subsequently, the lake itself was renamed Fateh Sagar in honor of the Maharana who gave it a second life.

Over time, the functional purpose of the lake changed. From an important element of the irrigation system, it turned into one of the main sources of drinking water for the entire city. Fateh Sagar is not an isolated body of water, but a key part of Udaipur's complex hydrological network. It is connected by canals to other famous lakes, particularly Lake Pichola and Rang Sagar, creating a unified and sustainable water system that serves the city to this day.

Time Needed

To fully experience Fateh Sagar Lake and its surroundings, it is recommended to allocate 2 to 4 hours. This time is enough not only to enjoy the views of the water itself but also to visit the key points of interest located on its territory without any rush.

Most of the time is usually spent on a boat ride, which allows you to fully appreciate the beauty of the lake and its surrounding hills. Additionally, you should plan a visit to the Nehru Garden, located on a picturesque island in the middle of the lake. The local aquarium and the Udaipur Solar Observatory are also of interest, adding variety to the visit and making the walk even more fulfilling.

Working Hours

Fateh Sagar Lake in Udaipur is a public space accessible for walking 24/7. You can enjoy its picturesque views at any time. However, most of the attractions located on its territory operate on a specific schedule. For example, the boat stations, Nehru Garden, and the aquarium are usually open to visitors from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
