The city of Fukushima in Japan features a moderate climate with four distinct seasons. Travellers can expect a noticeable change in weather conditions throughout the year. Winters (December-February) are quite cold here, with average temperatures around or even below zero degrees Celsius (for example, the average temperature in January is -1.4°C), and frequent precipitation, which often falls as snow in January and February. Summer (June-August), on the other hand, is warm, and in July and August can be quite hot, with average temperatures rising to 23-24°C (for example, the average temperature in August is 24.3°C).

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) represent pleasant transitional periods with gradual temperature changes, from cool to warm in spring and from warm to cool in autumn. One of the key features of Fukushima's climate is the significant number of days with precipitation practically year-round, even with a relatively small total monthly volume (from 2 to 6 mm). This means that light precipitation – whether rain or snow – is a fairly frequent phenomenon. The highest number of days with precipitation occurs in the summer months, especially July (21 days) and August (20 days), as well as in winter – January (20 days) and December (19 days), so an umbrella or raincoat may be useful at any time of the year.

The climate in Fukushima is characterized by significant seasonal temperature fluctuations. The annual range of average temperatures is quite wide: from cool winters to warm summers. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of -1.4°C, when night temperatures can drop to -4.6°C, and daytime highs barely rise above +1.9°C. February is also cold, with an average temperature of -0.4°C. Conversely, the hottest month is August, when the average temperature reaches +24.3°C, with daytime maximums up to +27.6°C and nighttime minimums around +21.0°C. July is also very warm, with an average temperature of +23.2°C.

The summer months in Fukushima, from June to August, are distinguished by warmth. In June, the average temperature is +18.7°C, gradually rising towards August. Daytime temperatures in summer range from +22.6°C in June to +27.6°C in August. Nights are also warm, especially in July and August, when the temperature rarely drops below +19.9°C - +21.0°C. Winter, covering December, January, and February, brings cool, and at times frosty weather. Average temperatures in December are +1.3°C, dropping to negative values in January. Night frosts are characteristic of the entire winter, and daytime temperatures often hover around zero or slightly above.

The transitional seasons – spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) – demonstrate a gradual change in temperatures. In spring, the temperature rises noticeably: from +4.4°C in March to +14.8°C in May. In autumn, conversely, a gradual cooling occurs: from +20.1°C in September to +7.7°C in November. Daily temperature fluctuations (the difference between daytime maximum and nighttime minimum) are most pronounced in the spring and autumn months, for example, in April the difference is about 9°C (from +5.0°C to +14.3°C), and in October about 7°C (from +10.0°C to +17.1°C). In summer and winter, these fluctuations are somewhat smaller, but still perceptible.

In the city of Fukushima, uneven distribution of precipitation is observed throughout the year. Although there is no clearly defined rainy season or long dry period here, one can distinguish months with greater or lesser intensity and frequency of precipitation. In general, the monthly amount of precipitation in millimetres remains moderate throughout the year, but the frequency of its occurrence can be quite high.

The wettest months by precipitation volume are July and August, with 6 mm falling in each. These summer months, as well as June (5 mm) and September (5 mm), are among the wettest of the year, bringing a significant share of annual precipitation, which, given the summer temperatures, falls as rain. July is also distinguished by the highest frequency of precipitation, when it is recorded on average for 21 days. In August, precipitation is also frequent (about 20 days), and in June and September, it is observed for approximately 17 days in each.

The winter period, especially January and December (3 mm of precipitation each), is also characterized by a high frequency of precipitation – about 20 days in January and 19 days in December – however, the precipitation itself is not very abundant. Considering that average minimum temperatures in these months drop significantly below zero (January: -4.6°C, December: -1.9°C), it is highly likely that winter precipitation often falls as snow. February (3 mm) follows this trend, with precipitation, predominantly snowy, for an average of 16 days. The driest month in terms of precipitation amount is November, when only 2 mm falls. At the same time, November, along with April and October, has the fewest number of days with precipitation – about 13 days in each.

When planning a trip to Fukushima, it is important to consider the distinct change of seasons characteristic of Japan. Regardless of the time of year, you will need comfortable shoes for walking. The key principle when packing your suitcase should be layering, as the weather can change throughout the day. Given the significant number of days with precipitation throughout the year, even with their small volume in some months, a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will be very useful.

Winter months (December-February) in Fukushima are quite cold, with average temperatures around 0°C and night frosts. During this period, you will need warm clothes: an insulated jacket (preferably wind- and waterproof), sweaters or fleece tops, thermal underwear, as well as a hat, gloves, and a scarf. March and November are transitional months when it is still cool, so warm layers of clothing remain relevant.

Summer (June-August) in Fukushima is warm and humid, with average temperatures above 20°C and a peak in precipitation, especially in July and August, when the number of rainy days is at its maximum. Pack light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics. Be sure to take a reliable umbrella or a good raincoat. On sunny days, sunscreen and a hat will come in handy.
