Weather Overview

Ukunda welcomes travellers with a classic tropical climate typical of the Kenyan coast. Eternal summer reigns here: air temperatures remain comfortably high throughout the year, and proximity to the ocean softens the heat. This destination is ideal for those dreaming of a beach holiday, as even in the "coolest" months, the air warms up to pleasant levels.

Weather conditions here are distinguished by high temperature stability, however, humidity and rainfall vary depending on the season. The beginning of the year, especially February, is considered the driest and hottest time, when rains are a rarity. At the same time, the period from April to May, as well as November, is characterized by an increase in the number of rainy days, which is worth considering when planning excursions and outdoor activities.

Even in the rainy season or the "coldest" months (July and August), it never gets cold in Ukunda: the average temperature stays at +24...+25°C. Precipitation is often short-lived, quickly replaced by bright sun, allowing one to enjoy the lush greenery and warm ocean year-round.

Temperature

Ukunda, located on the coast of Kenya, features a stably warm tropical climate where the concept of changing seasons is quite relative. The hottest period falls at the beginning of the year: in January, February, and March, the average air temperature is about 28.5°C, and daily highs often reach 32°C and above. This time is ideal for lovers of classic beach heat, when the sun warms the air and ocean to maximum comfort levels for swimming.

The conditional "winter", which lasts from June to August, brings only slight relief from the heat, but not cold. In these months, considered the coolest of the year, the average temperature drops to 24-25°C. During the day, the air warms up to a pleasant 26-27°C, creating ideal conditions for excursions and active leisure without the risk of overheating. For many tourists, this period is the most comfortable thanks to the absence of extremely high temperatures.

Daily temperature fluctuations in Ukunda are insignificant, making a stay at the resort pleasant at any time of day. The difference between day and night figures is usually only 4-7 degrees. Even on the "coldest" nights of July and August, the thermometer rarely drops below 22°C, and in the warm season, the night temperature holds at 25°C. Thanks to such a mild regime, you are unlikely to need warm clothes.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Ukunda is distributed unevenly throughout the year, forming distinct dry and wet periods characteristic of the Kenyan coast. The driest time of year is the beginning of the calendar year. In January and February, minimal rainfall is recorded (about 1 mm), and it rains extremely rarely. February, in particular, is considered the most favourable month for those wanting to avoid rain: on average, there are only about 4 days with precipitation.

With the arrival of spring, the picture changes. April becomes the peak of the rainy season: this is the wettest month, when precipitation falls almost daily (up to 28 days with rainfall), and its volume reaches the annual maximum (about 8 mm). May continues this trend, maintaining a high frequency of rains (about 22 days), so travellers should definitely have an umbrella or raincoat with them during this period.

The second half of the year, from June to December, is distinguished by a stable frequency of precipitation. Although total volume remains small (2–4 mm per month), rains occur quite often — from 20 to 24 days a month. In November, a slight spike in activity is observed, characteristic of the period of so-called "short rains". Nevertheless, even in these months, precipitation is often short-lived, allowing one to enjoy the region's warm climate.

What to Pack

Since Ukunda is located in a tropical climate zone, the weather here remains warm year-round with an average temperature from 24°C to 29°C. The basis of your wardrobe should be light summer clothing made of natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. T-shirts, shorts, light dresses, and sundresses in light colours will help tolerate the heat and high humidity easier. Don't forget swimwear, as beach holidays are relevant here in any season.

The sun in Kenya is very active, so your suitcase must contain sunscreen with a high SPF factor, quality sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. For walking and excursions, choose comfortable, broken-in shoes or sandals with good foot support, and flip-flops will be useful for the beach. Considering the presence of insects, especially in the evening, it is worth taking insect repellents.

Although air temperature is stable, it is worth considering the rainy season: in April, May, and June, the number of rainy days increases significantly (up to 28 days a month), so a light raincoat or compact umbrella will be extremely useful. In the "cool" months, such as July and August, temperatures at night can drop to 22°C, so a light cardigan, windbreaker, or long-sleeved shirt won't take up much space but will add comfort during evening walks by the ocean.
