How to get to Colima

How to get there: Introduction

When planning a trip to Colima, you are setting off for a charming city in the west of Mexico, known as the "City of Palms" and situated at the foot of a majestic volcano. You can reach Colima in various ways: by a direct flight to the local airport, by a comfortable bus from neighbouring regions, or by car, enjoying the picturesque landscapes of the state. This colourful corner offers tourists a unique combination of colonial architecture and natural beauty, accessible to travellers with any budget.

By Plane

The fastest way to reach the region is to take a flight to Colima Airport (CLQ), which is located just a few kilometres from the city centre. This air hub receives regular flights and ensures convenient connections with other parts of the country, making the journey maximally comfortable.

If direct tickets are unavailable, it makes sense to consider flying to neighbouring cities. The closest option is the airport in the city of Manzanillo (66 km), while for international travellers, the major aviation hub in the city of Guadalajara (163 km) serves as an excellent gateway. Arriving via Uruapan is also an option; although situated slightly further away, it is also convenient for transit.

Travel Tips

To ensure your stay in the city of Colima goes as smoothly as possible and leaves only pleasant impressions, it is worth preparing for local specifics in advance. Here are several recommendations that will help you feel confident in this colourful Mexican region.

  1. Clothing and Climate. It is usually warm and sunny here, so opt for light clothing made from natural fabrics (cotton, linen). However, if you plan an excursion to the volcano, be sure to bring a light jacket or windbreaker, as the temperature at high altitudes can be significantly lower.
  2. Getting Around the City. The city centre is convenient for walking, but for trips to distant districts, it is better to use official taxis or ride-hailing apps. Local buses are cheap but can be overcrowded during peak hours.
  3. Finances and Payment. The official currency is the Mexican Peso. Although cards are accepted in hotels and large restaurants, you will need cash in small shops and markets. It is better to carry small denominations.
  4. Health. Drink only bottled water and avoid ice in drinks at street cafes. Pharmacies (farmacias) are frequently found, but bring a basic kit of medicines with you, especially if you have a sensitive stomach.
  5. Language Barrier. The main language is Spanish. In tourist areas, staff may speak English, but by learning a few phrases in Spanish ("Hola", "Gracias", "Por favor"), you will earn the respect and appreciation of the locals.
  6. Safety. Colima is generally hospitable, but as everywhere, basic precautions should be observed: do not wear expensive jewellery openly and avoid walking on deserted streets after dark.
  7. Local Rhythm. Remember the siesta: many small shops and institutions may close for a break in the middle of the day when the sun is most active. Plan important errands for the morning.

Observing these simple rules will help you avoid minor inconveniences and fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the city. Enjoy the local cuisine, architecture, and views of the volcano without being distracted by everyday trifles.
