The climate of Durango can be described as temperate and semi-arid, which favourably distinguishes it from the hot tropical regions of Mexico. The weather here is generally comfortable for travel year-round: there is no extreme heat, and the air remains fresh due to the city's location. A characteristic feature of the local climate is the significant temperature difference between day and night, especially in winter, when after a sunny day the thermometer can drop to 3–5°C.

Seasonal changes are clearly traceable throughout the year. Winter and spring are times of dry and sunny weather. The warmest months are May and June, when daytime temperatures reach their peak, rising to almost 30°C. This is the ideal time for those who love warmth but want to avoid high humidity.

From the middle of summer, the picture changes: a distinct rainy season begins. July, August, and September are the wettest months, when the number of rainy days increases sharply (up to 20 days in July). Precipitation brings pleasant coolness, and the average temperature stays around 20°C. If your trip is planned for this period, it is worth being prepared for frequent but refreshing rains.

The temperature pattern in Durango is distinguished by pleasant variety, allowing travellers to choose the optimal time for a visit depending on their preferences. The annual temperature cycle reaches its peak in late spring and early summer: May and June are traditionally considered the hottest months, when the air warms up during the day to an average of 29–30°C. Conversely, the coolest are January and December, when average daily figures stay at the level of 11–12°C, creating a bracing atmosphere.

The summer period, especially July and August, is characterised by comfortable warmth without sweltering heat: daytime highs at this time are usually around 25–26°C, and nights bring pleasant freshness (about 14°C). Winter in this region of Mexico is quite mild and sunny. Even in the coldest months, one can enjoy temperatures around 20°C during the day, however, it is worth being prepared for the fact that nights can be truly cold, with temperatures dropping to 3–5°C.

A characteristic feature of the local climate is significant daily temperature fluctuations. The difference between the daytime maximum and nighttime minimum often exceeds 15 degrees, which is especially noticeable in the winter and spring periods. For example, in April after a hot day (up to +27°C), it cools down to +9°C by night. Therefore, tourists are recommended to bring layered clothing to easily adapt to weather changes throughout the day.

Precipitation in Durango is distributed extremely unevenly throughout the year, forming two clearly defined periods: a long dry season and a short but intense rainy season. Travellers should consider this factor, as the weather in summer and winter differs radically in humidity.

The main rainy season begins in June and lasts approximately until October. The wettest months are July, August, and September. The peak of precipitation falls in July, when about 20 rainy days are recorded. During this period, it rains often, refreshing the city after the daytime heat, however, rains are rarely prolonged, which allows for planning excursions even in this season.

The dry season lasts from November to May and is characterised by a minimal amount of precipitation. In winter and spring, rain is a great rarity. For example, March is considered one of the driest months, when precipitation is practically excluded. In winter months, such as December and January, the number of days with precipitation is also minimal (1–2 days), so you will hardly need an umbrella.

When packing for Durango, it is important to remember the significant temperature fluctuations during the day characteristic of this region. The best strategy for a traveller here is the principle of layering. Even if the sun warms the air to comfortable +20...+25°C during the day, evenings and early mornings can be quite cool, especially in winter when the temperature drops to +3°C. Therefore, be sure to take both light t-shirts and a warm sweater, fleece jacket, or light jacket.

If your trip is planned for summer or early autumn (from June to September), be ready for the rainy season. In July and August, precipitation falls very frequently, so a compact umbrella and a light waterproof raincoat will become your indispensable companions. In the dry spring months, when there is no rain at all and the sun is most active, do not forget to put high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat in your suitcase for protection against ultraviolet rays.

Regardless of the season, you will need comfortable and sturdy shoes to explore the colourful streets and natural attractions of Mexico. Give preference to worn-in sneakers or flat boots suitable for long walks.
