General Weather Overview
The climate of Zacatecas can be described as temperate and semi-arid, making it comfortable to visit at almost any time of the year. Due to the city's high-altitude location, the exhausting tropical heat typical of the Mexican coast is rare here. The weather is characterized by pleasant stability: days are usually warm and sunny, while nights bring a noticeable chill, so travelers should always have warm clothes on hand for the evening.
Two main seasons are clearly distinguishable throughout the year: dry and wet. Winter and early spring (from November to April) constitute the drought period, when precipitation is virtually absent and the sky remains clear. The warmest months are May and June, when daytime temperatures can rise to 28°C. In winter, particularly in January and December, the air becomes cooler, but during the day the thermometer still stays at comfortable levels around 19-20°C.
With the arrival of summer begins the rainy season, which lasts roughly from June to September. July and September stand out with the highest number of rainy days—up to 16-17 days per month. However, rainfall is often short-lived and brings welcome freshness, slightly lowering the average air temperature after a hot May. This time of year is excellent for those who prefer milder weather and are not afraid of periodic rain.
Temperature
The temperature regime in Zacatecas is distinguished by its mildness and lack of extreme heat, making the city comfortable to visit in any season. The warmest period is late spring and early summer: in May and June, the average temperature is around 21°C, and during the day the air can warm up to 28.5°C. The coolest months are traditionally considered December and January, when averages drop to 12-13°C, although even in winter, daytime temperatures often reach a pleasant 20°C.
Summer in this region of Mexico can be described as moderately warm. After the peak values of May, it becomes slightly fresher by July and August, with daytime highs holding at a comfortable level of 24-25°C. Winter here is mild and more resembles a cool spring, however, it is worth noting that nights can be quite cold.
An important feature of the local climate is the significant temperature fluctuation throughout the day. The difference between the daytime maximum and nighttime minimum often exceeds 10-15 degrees. For example, in January, after a sunny day with temperatures around 20°C, the air cools down to 5.4°C at night. Even in the summer months, nighttime temperatures rarely exceed 13-14°C, so travelers are recommended to always carry warm clothing for evening walks.
Precipitation
Zacatecas has a clearly defined seasonal distribution of precipitation, which divides the year into dry and wet periods. Winter and spring here pass almost without rain. From November to April, precipitation falls extremely rarely: statistics record an average of 0 to 2 rainy days per month, and the volume is minimal. This time of year is ideal for tourists who prefer dry and clear weather for walking along the colonial streets.
The situation changes with the arrival of summer when the rainy season begins. The number of wet days increases sharply in June, reaching its peak in July, when it can rain for about 17 days in the month. August and September also remain quite wet (from 12 to 16 rainy days), however, precipitation often takes the form of short downpours that refresh the air but do not drag on all day.
By October, the intensity of precipitation begins to subside (about 7 rainy days), transitioning smoothly to the dry winter season. Despite the fact that winter nighttime temperatures can drop quite low, precipitation falls almost exclusively as rain during the summer period, so an umbrella will be useful mainly if you are planning a trip from June to September.
What to Pack
A trip to Zacatecas requires a careful approach to your wardrobe due to noticeable temperature changes throughout the day. The main principle to follow when packing is layering. During the day, especially in May and June, the air can warm up to 27–28°C, so light t-shirts and cotton shirts will be very appropriate. However, as soon as the sun sets, it becomes noticeably cooler. In winter (from December to February), nighttime temperatures drop to 5–7°C, so be sure to take a warm sweater, a fleece jacket, and a windbreaker to feel comfortable during evening walks.
If you are planning a trip in the summer months or early autumn, it is worth preparing for the rainy season. July and September are the wettest months, when the number of rainy days can reach 16–17 per month. During this period, a compact umbrella or a light raincoat must be in your suitcase. In the dry season (winter and spring), precipitation is practically excluded, but the sun remains active all year round. Do not forget reliable sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from overheating.
For exploring urban attractions, choose the most comfortable shoes possible. Zacatecas is a city with a rich history and beautiful architecture, which implies long walks, often on cobblestones or uneven surfaces. The ideal choice would be broken-in sneakers or comfortable flat boots that provide good foot support and allow you to enjoy the city without fatigue.
