How to get to Khovd

Khovd is one of the oldest and most colourful cities in the western part of Mongolia, situated at the foot of the majestic Mongol Altai Mountains. It is a significant cultural hub of the region, attracting travellers with the opportunity to experience time-honored nomadic traditions and witness unique natural landscapes. When planning how to reach Khovd, tourists can choose a quick flight or embark on an exciting journey by car across the endless steppes.

The fastest way to reach the region is to take a flight to the local Khovd Airport (HVD). The air harbour receives regular domestic flights from the capital and ensures reliable connection between the city and the rest of the country. The airport is located quite close to the city limits, making arrival extremely convenient.

Alternatively, one can consider flying to neighbouring cities such as Olgii or Ulaangom. However, it is worth noting that they are located at a significant distance (over 160 km), and the onward journey to Khovd will require additional time for ground transfer.

There is no direct railway connection to the city of Khovd, as the railway network of Mongolia does not cover the western regions of the country. Travellers preferring trains will have to reach central stations in other parts of the country and cover the remaining distance via alternative transport.

The nearest major settlements, such as Olgii and Ulaangom, also lack access to the railway. Therefore, it is better to plan a trip to this region using aviation or cars.

Bus services connect Khovd with the capital and neighbouring provincial centres, serving as a popular and budget-friendly mode of transport for local residents. Trips usually depart from central bus stations, but one should be prepared for a long travel time due to vast distances and the terrain features.

Travelling by bus across Mongolia offers an opportunity to see the change of natural zones from steppes to mountains. It is recommended to check the schedule and ticket availability in advance, as seats on long-distance routes can sell out quickly.

A car journey allows you to enjoy the wild nature of the region at your own pace. The route from the city of Olgii is considered one of the fastest: a distance of 225 km can be covered in approximately 3 hours, whilst enjoying views of the Altai Mountains. The road from the city of Ulaangom will take more time — about 6 hours for a journey nearly 250 km long.

For travelling on these routes, it is strongly recommended to use a reliable off-road vehicle (SUV), as the quality of the surface may vary. Services of private drivers and taxis are available between cities, but it is best to negotiate the cost of the trip in advance.

A trip to Khovd promises to be an unforgettable adventure, but the harsh climate and remoteness of the region require careful preparation. To ensure your journey is comfortable and safe, please pay attention to the following recommendations.

1. Layered clothing. The climate here is sharply continental: even in summer, nights can be cold, and winds piercing. Be sure to bring a windproof jacket, fleece, and comfortable trekking shoes.
2. Transport nuances. Within the city, you can move around on foot or by taxi, which is inexpensive. For trips outside the city to natural attractions, you will need to rent an off-road vehicle with a driver.
3. Cash. Although major shops and hotels may accept cards, only cash Tugriks are used in small shops and markets. Take care of currency exchange in advance or withdraw money from ATMs in the centre.
4. Health and water. Do not drink tap water; buy bottled water. Pack a first aid kit with essential medicines, as specific preparations may be difficult to find locally.
5. Language barrier. Many representatives of the older generation understand Russian, but young people are more oriented towards English or speak only Mongolian. An offline translator on your phone will be very useful.
6. Respect for traditions. When visiting a yurt, one must not step on the threshold. Accepting treats or passing items should be done with the right hand (or both hands); this is a sign of respect for the hosts.
7. Seasonal produce. Khovd is famous for its watermelons and melons, which ripen by the end of summer. Do not miss the opportunity to taste local melons — they are considered some of the best in the country.
