About

Imagine a space where the coziness of an old library meets the energy of a modern cocktail bar. That is the best way to describe Itaka Library Bar — one of the most unusual establishments hidden within Podgorica. This three-level cultural hub is set in a unique historic building that once served as a Turkish bath, giving its interior a special sense of mystery and authenticity.

This spot in Montenegro is rightfully considered a "hidden gem." The library-bar promotes the values of culture, art, and ecology. Inside, visitors are greeted by narrow galleries lined with bookshelves, a central atrium, and stylish quirky decor, creating a relaxing atmosphere perfect for both thoughtful reading and evening gatherings with friends.

Itaka Library Bar is more than just a drinking establishment. An exhibition hall for local artists often operates on the third floor, turning a relaxing break into a full cultural immersion. What to Do

There is something for everyone at this venue. The main ritual here is to pick a book from one of the many shelves and settle onto a soft plush sofa with a cup of coffee or a signature cocktail, such as the house Yuzu Mule. If you are looking for a quiet place to work on your laptop during the day, the library atmosphere provides the necessary focus.

In the evening, the bar transforms: here you can try craft beer on tap, which is a rarity for local spots, or sample Balkan wines. Music lovers should keep an eye on social media announcements for live jazz performances or acoustic sets by local bands, which take place in the intimate setting of the ground floor.

Don't forget to head up to the rooftop terrace to enjoy the breeze on a hot day, or visit the third floor where works by Montenegrin artists are exhibited. The menu also features light snacks and healthy food options, so you can enjoy a full bite to eat surrounded by art and literature.

Getting There

Finding this hidden treasure is an adventure in itself. The venue is located right under the Novi Most (New Bridge) overpass in the Cvijetin Brijeg Banja district. This unusual location beneath a highway gives the bar a "secret spot" vibe known only to those in the know.

If you are in the center of Podgorica, the walk to the bar will take no more than 10–15 minutes. For those who prefer comfort, a local taxi is an excellent option: trips around the city are inexpensive and take just a few minutes. You can also take a bus to the nearest stop by the bridge, and for those traveling by car, there are parking spaces nearby.

Look for the bridge pillars and signs — despite its tucked-away nature, the entrance to this cultural space is quite noticeable thanks to its unique exterior. It is an ideal spot for travelers who enjoy exploring the city on foot.

History & Facts

The building that houses Itaka Library Bar today has a fascinating past: it once served as a women's Turkish bath. This architectural fragment of old Ottoman heritage has blended harmoniously into the modern landscape, becoming one of the city's most unusual sites.

Before taking on its current form, the space functioned as a book café, opening in its current format around 2021–2022. The concept of the venue is built on a sustainable lifestyle, cultural preservation, and environmental protection, turning a historic site into a vibrant community hub.

In 2022, the project gained international recognition, being featured in European travel guides as one of the most original terrace bars. This place vividly demonstrates how new life can be breathed into old walls, creating a collage of history, literature, and modern gastronomy right beneath a busy city thoroughfare.

Time Needed

A quick visit to see the interior and enjoy a cup of coffee will take about one hour. However, to truly soak in the atmosphere, we recommend setting aside 2–3 hours.

This is enough time to leisurely browse the bookshelves, check out the exhibition hall on the third floor, and enjoy a cocktail on the terrace. If you plan to attend a jazz concert or an art event, plan to spend the entire evening here.

Working Hours

The venue welcomes guests daily. From Monday to Saturday, the bar is open from 09:00 to 00:00, and on Sunday, the doors open slightly later — from 11:00 until midnight.

Since the bar often hosts private events or themed nights, we recommend checking their official Instagram page before your visit to confirm the current schedule for a specific date.
