About

Imagine a labyrinth where every turn reveals a new shade of sky blue, azure, or cobalt. This is the Medina of Chefchaouen — the legendary historic center in the city of El Aaiun, which has become a hallmark of Morocco. This amazing place, often called the "Blue Pearl," is recognized as one of the most photogenic sights in the world thanks to its unique architecture and the tradition of painting house walls in vibrant blue tones.

The heart of the old city is the lively Uta el-Hammam square, where the rhythm of life is set by cozy cafes and the majestic walls of the ancient 15th-century Kasbah. The Medina is a harmonious blend of Arabic traditions and Andalusian influence, evident in the elegant arched doorways, mosaic fountains, and tiled roofs that create an atmosphere of an Oriental fairy tale.

In contrast to the noisy markets of other Moroccan cities, a more peaceful and contemplative atmosphere reigns here. Strolling through the narrow streets, you will encounter local artisans offering leather and wool products, see the Great Mosque with its rare octagonal minaret, and enjoy the silence of hidden courtyards decorated with flower pots.

What to Do

The main activity here is a leisurely exploration of the endless blue alleys. Arm yourself with a camera, as every step through the medina offers a perfect shot: from cats sleeping on the steps to bright textiles hanging on the walls. Be sure to find Place El Haouta with its elegant fountain — it is one of the most peaceful and beautiful spots in the old city.

History buffs should visit the Kasbah (fortress). Inside, you'll find a shady Andalusian garden and an ethnographic museum, while the fortress walls offer breathtaking views of the blue quarters and the surrounding Rif Mountains. If you get hungry, head to Plaza Uta el-Hammam to try a traditional tagine or sip mint tea while watching the flow of city life.

Towards evening, take a short hike up to the Spanish Mosque, located on a hill outside the city walls. This is the best place to see the setting sun paint the "blue city" in golden hues. On the way, you will pass the Ras el-Ma spring, where locals still gather to wash carpets and socialize, adding an authentic touch to your walk.

Getting There

There are several ways to reach this picturesque corner of Morocco. The most popular option for independent travelers is the CTM or Supratours buses, which run regularly from Tangier, Fes, or Tetouan. A trip from Tangier takes about 3 hours, and from Fes, it takes 4 to 5 hours along mountain serpentines.

If you prefer comfort and speed, you should use a grand taxi (intercity taxi). They depart once full and allow you to reach the city faster than public transport. For those traveling in a rental car, the drive through the Rif Mountains offers plenty of impressive views; however, remember that cars are prohibited inside the medina itself.

Upon arriving at the bus station, you can reach the main gates of the old city, such as Bab el-Ain, on foot in just 10–15 minutes. If you are staying in the central part of the city of El Aaiun, a local taxi (petit taxi) will quickly take you to the foot of the hill where the blue labyrinths begin.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1471, when the Moorish prince Moulay Ali Ben Rashid founded a small fortress to protect the region from Portuguese invasions. A few decades later, after the completion of the Reconquista in Spain, streams of Muslim and Jewish refugees arrived. They brought with them the unique Andalusian style of architecture that still defines the look of the old quarters today.

For centuries, the city remained almost isolated from the outside world. Until the beginning of the 20th century, entry for foreigners was practically closed, allowing the medina to preserve its pristine medieval appearance. Narrow passages, massive wooden doors, and the fortified walls of the 15th-century Kasbah seem frozen in time, telling a story of resilience and cultural fusion.

The origin of the famous blue color of the walls is still debated by historians and locals. According to one version, the tradition was established by Jewish communities, for whom blue symbolized the sky and the divine presence. Others believe it is a practical solution to repel insects or protect from the summer heat. Whatever the reason, this tradition has turned an ordinary settlement into a world-famous legend.

Time Needed

To truly feel the magic of the "Blue Pearl," it is recommended to set aside 4 to 6 hours for a walk. This is enough time to slowly wander through the main alleys, take dozens of photos of the famous blue doors, and browse the craft shops for unique souvenirs.

You should allow about an hour to visit the Kasbah and its ethnographic museum, as well as to climb to the viewpoints for a panoramic view of the terracotta roofs. If you plan to have lunch at one of the restaurants in Plaza Uta el-Hammam or want to wait for the sunset by the Spanish Mosque, it’s best to plan for a full day.

Working Hours

The Medina of Chefchaouen is accessible 24/7. You can freely wander its streets at any time of day or night, enjoying the silence of the early morning or the lively evening atmosphere. According to official data, the site is open 24 hours a day from Monday to Sunday.

However, keep in mind that museums (such as the Kasbah), souvenir shops, and restaurants have their own schedules, typically opening around 9:00 or 10:00 AM and closing after sunset. The best time for a walk without the crowds is in the early morning hours just after dawn.
