General Weather Overview

The climate in Rabat, the capital of Morocco, can be described as Mediterranean, softened by the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. The city is characterized by two main seasons: a warm, sunny, and very dry summer, and a mild, wetter winter. Overall, the weather in Rabat features moderate temperatures throughout the year, without sharp fluctuations, making it comfortable to visit during various seasons.

The summer months, especially from June to September, delight guests of Rabat with a large number of sunny days and an average air temperature ranging from 21.3°C to 24.2°C. Precipitation at this time is a rarity, particularly in July and August, when the number of rainy days approaches zero. Winter, lasting from December to February, remains comfortable with average temperatures around 14-15.4°C. It is during this period, as well as spring (March-April) and late autumn (October-November), that the main, albeit small, amount of annual precipitation falls, with the number of rainy days ranging from 6 to 9 per month.

Temperature

The climate in Rabat is characterized by mildness and moderation throughout the year, thanks to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. The annual range of average temperatures fluctuates from approximately 14.0°C in January to 24.2°C in August. The hottest months are traditionally July and August, when the average daytime temperature reaches 23.7-24.2°C, and maximum values can rise to 27-28°C. The coolest months are considered to be January and February, with an average temperature of about 14-15°C and minimum night-time temperatures dropping to 11-12°C.

The summer months in Rabat, from June to September, offer pleasantly warm and sunny weather. Average maximum temperatures during this period range from 24.6°C in June to 27.9°C in August, while nights remain comfortable with temperatures around 18-20°C. Precipitation is practically absent in summer. Winter, from December to March, is mild here. Daytime temperatures usually stay in the range of 17-19°C, and night-time temperatures drop to 11-12°C, making the weather cool but not freezing. It is worth noting that diurnal temperature fluctuations are not too great; the difference between daytime highs and night-time lows averages 6-7°C, ensuring comfortable conditions during the day and cooler evenings.

Precipitation

Rabat observes a typical Mediterranean precipitation pattern with a clearly defined dry summer season and a wetter period in the other months. The total amount of precipitation in the city is low, which is characteristic of this climatic zone.

The main part of the annual precipitation falls between October and April. The "wettest" months, despite modest figures, are January, March, and December, when about 2 mm of precipitation falls on average. March also stands out with the highest number of days with precipitation – about 9 days. In February, April, October, and November, the amount of precipitation is usually about 1 mm, and the number of rainy days fluctuates around 6-7. Given the small amount, precipitation typically takes the form of light or moderate rain. Snow is uncharacteristic for Rabat.

The summer months – July and August – are absolutely dry, with zero precipitation and no rainy days. June and September are also extremely arid: in June, only 1 day with insignificant precipitation is possible (statistically 0 mm), and in September – about 2 days, also with a zero average precipitation figure. May serves as a transition month to the dry season, when the amount of precipitation decreases to 1 mm, and the number of rainy days drops to 3.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Rabat, it is important to consider the local climate features to ensure your wardrobe is as comfortable as possible. In the summer months, especially from June to August, when the average maximum temperature rises to 27-28°C and precipitation is practically absent, preference should be given to light and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics. T-shirts, shorts, sundresses, as well as a hat, sunglasses, and high SPF cream will be your best companions. Evenings are also warm, but a light wrap or long-sleeved shirt may be useful for comfort.

In winter, from December to February, the weather in Rabat remains mild, with average maximum temperatures around 17-18°C and minimums around 11-12°C. Rainy days are possible during this period (on average 7-9 per month), so it is worth taking a light waterproof jacket or raincoat, as well as a compact umbrella. For comfort, sweaters, jeans or thick trousers, and closed shoes will come in handy. In the shoulder seasons (March-May and September-November), the weather can be changeable, so the principle of layering in clothing will be very useful: t-shirts that can be supplemented with a cardigan, fleece jacket, or windbreaker will allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day.

Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity, as Rabat invites long walks through its streets and attractions. Considering that even in the cool months the daytime temperature can be quite pleasant for walking, and in the warm months hot, layering your clothes will allow you to feel comfortable throughout the day. Do not forget a small bag or backpack for day excursions, where you can put a bottle of water, sunscreen, or an extra layer of clothing.
