The club is named after the famous American artist Andy Warhol, and his influence is felt in every detail of the interior. The walls serve as a canvas for street art and original installations, among which the famous "wings" stand out—a favorite spot for striking Instagram shots. Occupying a historic squat building, the café has preserved the spirit of freedom and creativity so valued by local students and tourists.

Since 2008, Nachtcafé Warhol has operated as a space for "real night owls." It’s more than just a dance floor; it’s a place with a special energy where the lack of mainstream pretension and an emphasis on positive fun make every night unforgettable. The club is rightfully considered one of the gems of the city's nightlife, offering guests a unique blend of history, art, and music.

What to Do

At Nachtcafé Warhol, everyone will find something to their liking, whether it's high-energy dancing or contemplating contemporary art. The main draw of the venue is, of course, the dance floor, where time-tested pop and rock hits play until the early morning. The atmosphere here is charged with energy, and the lack of strict formalities allows guests to fully relax and be themselves.

Be sure to stop by the bar to try the famous Long Island Iced Tea—a cocktail considered legendary here and especially popular among the student crowd. Between dance sets, take some time to admire the interior: the club's walls are adorned with amazing street art and murals that you can look at for hours. Don’t forget to take a selfie by the wing art installation, which has become the club's visual symbol.

Occasionally, the venue hosts live performances and unusual shows that can surprise even seasoned club-goers. It’s the perfect place for those who want to meet Groningen's creative youth, exchange a few words with interesting people, and simply enjoy the positive energy that literally fills the air in this alternative space.

Getting There

The venue is located in a cozy alleyway in the city center at Papengang 6. Nachtcafé Warhol is in a pedestrian zone, so the easiest way to get here is a leisurely walk. From the main square, Grote Markt, it's just a few minutes away, and from Groningen's central railway station, you can reach it in about 10–15 minutes on foot.

For those who prefer public transport, many buses stop near the station, connecting the center with the outskirts. However, the most authentic way to get around the city is by bicycle. You can leave your bike at one of the many nearby parking spots.

If you plan to return to your hotel in the early morning hours, it’s best to use a taxi or call an Uber. Driving your own car into the center can be difficult due to limited parking and the pedestrian status of many streets, so it’s recommended to leave your car in a secure parking lot outside the historic core.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1986 when the club first opened on Peperstraat. Just a year later, the venue moved to its current building on Papengang, which at the time was known as a kraakpand—a typical Dutch squat. The current owner's father saw the potential in this abandoned space and transformed it into one of the city's most vibrant night cafés.

The club's name is a direct reference to Andy Warhol, the pop art icon. The creators aimed to bring to life the artist's philosophy of blurring the boundaries between art and everyday life. The interior was created with the participation of local artists who decorated the walls with murals and paintings, turning the nightclub into a sort of gallery space.

Since 2008, the Nachtcafé has firmly established its status as the main alternative venue for young people. Inspired by the atmosphere of Warhol’s famous "Factory," the club has become a place where intellectual freedom meets high-energy fun, preserving its spirit of rebellion and creativity for decades.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the club's atmosphere and its music program, it's worth setting aside about 3–5 hours. The club starts to come alive closer to midnight, so there's no point in arriving too early unless you want to admire the interior in peace.

This amount of time is plenty to enjoy the signature cocktails, dance to your favorite hits, and take vibrant photos against the street art backdrops. If your goal is just to stop by for one drink and check out the venue, an hour will suffice, but most guests stay until closing time.

Working Hours

Nachtcafé Warhol operates on a schedule that night owls will truly appreciate. The club's doors are open to guests from Monday to Saturday inclusive, with opening hours from 22:00 to 06:00. Sunday is the venue's official day off.
