Rørosmuseet Smelthytta

About

In the very heart of the historic center of Røros lies a unique industrial monument — the Røros Museum Smelthytta. Built on the ruins of an ancient copper smelter, this site is a living testament to the rich industrial past that Norway is famous for. The museum is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is situated on the picturesque banks of the Hitterelva River, whose waters once powered the factory's machinery.

The main feature of Smelthytta is its detailed reconstructions of mines and smelting plants. The permanent exhibition "Kobberverket" is a collection of masterfully crafted 1:10 scale models that clearly demonstrate all stages of copper ore mining and processing. These interactive models make complex history understandable and engaging for both adult researchers and young travelers.

In addition to industrial themes, the museum offers a glimpse into the cultural life of the region through the "Ti finpussa" exhibition. This features a rare collection of 19th-century festive clothing from the town's residents, showcasing the fashion and traditions of past centuries. The combination of rugged technical history and elegant ethnographic heritage makes this museum one of the most significant attractions in the northern region.

What to Do

The main reason to visit Røros Museum Smelthytta is the chance to see history in motion. We highly recommend joining a 50-minute guided tour. Experienced storytellers literally "bring to life" the miniature models of mines and smelters, explaining exactly how 17th–19th century mechanisms worked and the dangers that awaited miners deep underground.

For those who prefer independent exploration, audio guides are available in several languages via QR codes. Be sure to linger in the hall featuring the 19th-century festive costume collection — it is a wonderful opportunity to see the "fashionable" side of the harsh mining life. The intricately detailed outfits tell as much about the holidays and celebrations of that time as archival documents.

After immersing yourself in history, stop by the museum cafe to relax and discuss your impressions over a cup of coffee. In the local shop, you can purchase authentic souvenirs and literature dedicated to the history of Røros. If you are traveling with children, they will surely enjoy watching the water wheels and other mechanisms, which can be seen in detail thanks to the open layout of the halls.

Røros Museum Smelthytta is located at Lorentz Lossius Gata 45, right in the historic Malmplassen district on the banks of the Hitterelva River. It is easy to find, as the building is situated in the very heart of the UNESCO-listed mining settlement. If you are already walking through the old town, the path to the museum will take no more than a leisurely 10–15 minute stroll.

For those arriving in the city by train, the walk from Røros railway station takes about 5–10 minutes. This is the most convenient way to reach the site if you are traveling by intercity transport. Regional buses also stop in the city center, from which the museum complex can be reached on foot or by local taxi.

If you plan to travel by car, there is convenient parking near the museum, designed for both cars and tour buses. Røros is a compact town, so most tourists prefer to leave their vehicles in the parking lot and enjoy a scenic walk through the picturesque streets to the main gates of Smelthytta.

History & Facts

The history of this site is inextricably linked to the activities of the Røros Copper Works, which was founded back in 1646. For three centuries, until 1953, work was in full swing here: copper concentrate mined in nearby mines, such as Storwartz and Nordgruvefeltet, was smelted. Energy for the heavy machinery was provided by the turbulent Hitterelva River, on whose banks the production grew.

The fate of the smeltery building (smelthytta) itself was dramatic: it suffered from devastating fires twice. The last time the smelting workshop burned down was in 1975, leaving behind only ruins. However, it was decided to erect a modern museum on this historic foundation, which opened its doors to visitors in 1988, preserving the authentic atmosphere of the industrial era.

Today, the museum is a key element of the UNESCO World Heritage site. Its exhibits allow you to trace the technological evolution of copper mining: from manual labor and horse-drawn carriages to the appearance of cableways and railways. Thanks to the efforts of historians and restorers, Røros Museum Smelthytta has become a living monument to the industrial progress that once turned a small Norwegian settlement into a significant industrial center.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the exhibits and delve into the details of the technological processes, most visitors need between 1 and 1.5 hours. If you plan to join an organized tour, it usually lasts about 50 minutes, after which you should leave time for independent study of the models and temporary exhibitions.

History and technology buffs may need a bit more time, especially if they want to study the operation of the moving 1:10 scale models in detail. Also, don't forget to set aside an extra 20–30 minutes to visit the cozy museum cafe and browse the souvenir shop, where you can find unique items from local artisans.

Working Hours

Røros Museum Smelthytta operates on a consistent schedule, allowing tourists to easily plan their visit at any time of year. The museum doors are open daily from 10:00 to 15:00. This is a convenient time to combine visiting the exhibits with a stroll through the town or lunch at one of the local restaurants.

Please note that the museum is closed on certain holidays: January 1, May 1 and 17, and December 24 and 25. During the summer period, tours are held daily, while in winter, guided group tours are usually organized on Thursdays and Saturdays.
