The Silesian Zoo (Śląski Ogród Zoologiczny) is one of the largest and most popular attractions not only near the city of Katowice but in all of Poland. Located on the scenic grounds of Silesian Park, bordering the city of Chorzów, it is home to thousands of animals. The zoo was founded in 1954 and has been delighting visitors of all ages ever since.
An impressive area of about 47.5 hectares is inhabited by approximately 3,000 animals representing over 300 species from around the world. Here you can find elephants, giraffes, rhinoceroses, big cats, and many others. The zoo boasts one of the country's largest collections of African animals, as well as a recently renovated pavilion for Humboldt penguins, which have returned here after a long absence. Additionally, the grounds house the unique "Dinosaur Valley" featuring life-sized concrete reconstructions of prehistoric reptiles.
Every year, the Silesian Zoo attracts more than 380,000 visitors, making it an important center for recreation and education in the region. It is a wonderful place for a leisurely stroll where you can spend a whole day learning about amazing fauna and enjoying the well-kept park area. For the youngest visitors, there is a mini-zoo where they can get up close and personal with domestic animals.
