In this unique location in the heart of Poland, approximately 100,000 exhibits have been gathered. Of particular value is the collection of 27 pastels by the famous artist Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, as well as authentic interior items, porcelain, and clothing that once belonged to local residents. The museum is famous for its authenticity, as most of its treasures were donated by the townspeople themselves.

The "crown jewel" of the exhibition is the reconstructed apartments of the bourgeoisie and middle class from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Walking through the furnished rooms, from spacious living rooms to cozy kitchens, visitors can literally feel the rhythm of life of a Silesian family from a century ago. This place is ideal for those who want to see history not in dry figures, but in the living details of everyday life.

What to Do

This immersion into the atmosphere of the Belle Époque is complemented by interactive elements and multimedia materials.

Art lovers should pay special attention to the unique series of pastels by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, which is the pride of the museum's collection. Additionally, you can study old architectural drawings, photographs, and documents that reveal the secrets of the city's development. If you have time left, be sure to visit the museum's branch in the Nikiszowiec district. This is a unique workers' settlement with characteristic brick architecture, where you can see how miners' families lived. Combining the main exhibition with a visit to this atmospheric suburb will allow you to form a complete picture of the region's social and industrial heritage.

History & Facts

The history of this site began long before the first visitors entered its halls. The museum building itself was constructed in 1908 by the entrepreneur William Bieger. This four-story Art Nouveau house was originally intended for wealthy residents and was equipped with the latest technology of the time, including then-rare central heating.

The idea of creating a proper city museum emerged in the early 1970s. Notably, the formation of the collection was a community effort: many unique exhibits were donated by city residents. The institution officially opened on August 21, 1976, and since then, it has served as the primary guardian of the region's memory.

The museum's exhibition covers a vast period, starting from 1299. It clearly demonstrates the transformation of Katowice from a small village into a powerful industrial and cultural center. The attention to the everyday details of the bourgeoisie and middle class makes this museum one of the most atmospheric in Silesia.

Time Needed

To explore all three floors of the main exhibition without rushing and to take in the details of the interiors, it usually takes between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. This is enough time to study the reconstructed apartments, view the painting collection, and look through historical documents.

If you plan to visit temporary exhibitions or want to study the information materials in English or Polish in more detail, it is worth allowing a bit more time. The museum encourages thoughtful contemplation, so there is no need to rush.
