Rzeszowskie Piwnice - interaktywna instytucja kultury

About

Hidden right beneath the cobblestones of the Market Square lies one of the most fascinating attractions Poland has to offer — the Rzeszów Underground Tourist Route (Rzeszowskie Piwnice). This unique interactive space is a complex labyrinth of 34 historical chambers and corridors with a total length of 213 meters.

Once, these cellars served as warehouses and shelters for residents, but today the city of Rzeszów has transformed them into a modern cultural institution. The route harmoniously combines the authentic brickwork of medieval cellars with cutting-edge multimedia technologies. Visitors can expect light installations, sound effects, and interactive screens that bring legends and real historical events of the past to life.

Reopened in its renovated form in early 2022, this site has become more than just a museum; it is an innovative platform for education and art. Outside, in front of the entrance, guests are greeted by the Culture Square (Skwer Kultury) with a spectacular LED floor, which in the evenings turns into a stage for light shows, linking the historical heritage of the undergrounds with the modern rhythm of city life.

What to Do

After descending underground, you will find yourself on an interactive trail where the city's history literally comes alive before your eyes. Here, you can not only examine ancient walls but also actively interact with the exhibition: sensor stations and multimedia screens allow you to learn about the life of medieval merchants, the development of crafts, and the secrets of the city's defense. Virtual reconstructions help you see how the appearance of the Market Square has changed over the centuries.

Be sure to stop by the local cinema room, where documentaries and feature films about the region's history are shown. For art lovers, the Rzeszów Cellars offer regular exhibitions of contemporary artists, performances, and concerts held in the unique acoustics of the underground halls. Multi-level passages with varying heights create a sense of a real adventure, suitable for travelers of all ages.

Wrap up your visit back on the surface at the Culture Square. In the evening, dynamic floor lighting is switched on, creating a futuristic atmosphere. This is a great place for striking photos and relaxing after the tour, where open-air dance events and musical performances are often held.

Getting There

Finding this unique site is easy, as it is located at Rynek 26, in the very heart of the historic center. Rzeszów is a compact city, so the entrance to the undergrounds is within easy walking distance of most central hotels and landmarks, such as the Town Hall or the Lubomirski Castle.

If you plan to use public transport, choose buses or trams heading to the Rynek stop. From the main railway station (Rzeszów Główny), the journey takes about 10 minutes by transport (for example, tram No. 10) or a pleasant 20–25 minute walk through the city streets. From Rzeszów-Jasionka International Airport (RZE), it is most convenient to take a taxi or a shuttle bus; the trip will take approximately 15–20 minutes.

For those traveling by car, please note that parking directly on the Market Square is limited. It is better to leave your car in one of the paid parking lots nearby and walk to the entrance, using the Culture Square with its distinctive modern design as a landmark.

History & Facts

The history of this site dates back to the 14th century. At that time, Rzeszów was actively developing as a trade center, and townspeople began digging deep cellars under their houses and the Market Square. Due to dense construction, space on the surface was limited, so these underground levels were used as warehouses, shops, and craft workshops.

In turbulent times, the medieval tunnels turned into a reliable shelter for residents, saving them during fires and other hardships. Over time, the network of corridors grew to several levels, reaching depths of dozens of meters. However, after the decline of trade, many cellars were abandoned and forgotten until the 20th century, when the threat of the central square collapsing forced city authorities to begin strengthening them.

Large-scale restoration work was carried out in the 80s and 90s under the strict supervision of archaeologists. The first version of the underground route opened to tourists in 2001, but the "Rzeszów Cellars" only acquired their modern look recently. After a global modernization completed in 2022 with EU support, the ancient walls were filled with high-tech content, turning the historical monument into a next-generation multimedia space.

Time Needed

To explore all the secret corners of the underground route without rushing and fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere, visitors usually need 1.5 to 2.5 hours. About an hour is spent walking the main route to see the chambers and corridors, while the rest of the time should be reserved for interacting with the touch stations and watching materials in the cinema room.

If you plan to visit one of the temporary exhibitions or attend a cultural event at the Culture Square, we recommend setting aside about 3 hours for your visit. This will allow you not only to learn about the history but also to enjoy the modern creative side of this space.

Working Hours

The site welcomes visitors from Tuesday to Sunday. The doors to the undergrounds are open from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, providing plenty of time to explore the exhibition both in the morning and evening hours.

Please note that Monday is a day off. During special festivals or holidays, the schedule may change, so it is worth checking the information on the institution's official website before your visit.
