What to Do

A visit to the cathedral offers guests not only a spiritual experience but also aesthetic pleasure. Inside the church, pay attention to the five-tier iconostasis created in 1901, which is striking in its fine craftsmanship and richness of decoration. The Baroque sculptures of the main altar add a special monumentality and grandeur to the interior, characteristic of the Byzantine decorative style.

Before entering the cathedral, be sure to look at the figures of Saint Vladimir the Great and Princess Olga decorating the facade. These details emphasize the church's deep cultural connection with historical heritage. Next to the cathedral, the building of the former Jesuit monastery with its collegium has also been preserved — today, it serves as an academic building for the medical university, harmoniously complementing the square's architectural ensemble.

History & Facts

The history of the cathedral began in the early 18th century when Jesuit monks arrived in the city. The original church was built between 1720 and 1729, but due to serious structural errors, the building quickly fell into decay and was demolished. The cathedral acquired its modern look between 1752 and 1761, when construction was carried out according to the design of Austro-Bavarian Baroque masters under the patronage of Stanisław Potocki.

Legend has it that while laying the foundation, builders discovered a treasure of 14,000 zlotys. These unexpectedly found funds were entirely directed toward finishing the construction, which local residents considered a good sign. Over the centuries of its existence, the building has changed denominations several times: from Jesuits to Greek Catholics, and from 1946 to 1990, it belonged to the Orthodox Church.

Renovations carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries allowed for the preservation of its unique decor and structural integrity. The last major exterior updates were completed in 2003, returning the cathedral to its original splendor and emphasizing its status as an architectural landmark the entire region is proud of.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the church interiors, study the iconostasis, and walk around the facade, 1 to 1.5 hours is usually enough. This time is also sufficient to peek into the neighboring courtyard of the collegium and take memorable photos against the backdrop of the towers.
