History & Facts

The history of this scenic spot began in 1876 when it was officially opened as a city park. However, the area was known much earlier: as far back as the 17th century, travelers described a dense oak forest here, part of which has been preserved to this day.

In the late 19th century, the park was named after Empress Elisabeth (Elizaveta), and in 1901, it became one of the most technically advanced leisure spots in the region, featuring modern gas lighting. The park received its current name in honor of the great Ukrainian poet in 1945.

A significant expansion of the territory occurred in 1948 when the former estate of Baron Romashkan, including three picturesque ponds, was added to the park. Since 1972, the site has held the status of a monument of landscape architecture, confirming its high dendrological and historical value.
