Hornbeam Walk

About

Imagine a living corridor of intertwined branches that creates the feeling of a fairy-tale tunnel. This is exactly what the Hornbeam Alley looks like—a unique piece of landscape art located in the resort town of Kołobrzeg. It is a rare type of garden structure for a country like Poland, known as a berceau, where hornbeam branches form a solid green arch over the heads of passersby.

Stretching for 130 meters, the alley leads straight to the city port. Locals often call it the "Alley of Love" for the special romantic atmosphere that reigns here at any time of year. In summer, a pleasant coolness is preserved under the dense canopy of trees, and in autumn, the tunnel is painted in golden hues.

In addition to its aesthetic beauty, the Hornbeam Alley has the status of an official natural monument. Its high rating among travelers confirms that it is one of the city's most photogenic and soulful locations, where natural form harmoniously combines with skillful human care.

What to Do

The main pleasure that the Hornbeam Alley offers is a leisurely promenade. Strolling under the arches of the "Alley of Love," you can feel like you're in an old European park. Because the hornbeam branches are tightly interwoven, a special microclimate is created inside, perfect for taking a break from the city bustle.

For photography enthusiasts, this place is a real goldmine. The play of light and shadow filtering through the leaves creates a dramatic and beautiful backdrop for portraits. In spring and summer, the alley delights with vibrant greenery, and in the evening, thanks to a well-thought-out lighting system, it turns into a mysterious glowing corridor.

A visit to the alley can easily be included in a larger walking route. It is located just a few hundred meters from the port and Stefan Żeromski Park. After a quiet walk, you can head to the sea or watch the ships, making this place an excellent spot for family relaxation or a romantic date.

Getting There

The Hornbeam Alley is conveniently located at the intersection of Mickiewicza and Towarowa streets, in the immediate vicinity of the city port. If you are staying in the city center, a pleasant walk to this location will take about 25–30 minutes (the distance from the Kołobrzeg railway station is approximately 2 km).

For those who prefer public transport, bus routes heading towards the port or the waterfront are suitable. In particular, you can take bus No. 2, which stops nearby. If you are at the central beach, the walk is only about 650 meters.

Travelers arriving by car can leave their vehicle at one of the paid parking lots in the port area. This location is also a popular point on the cycling route leading to the "Eastern Kołobrzeg" Eco-Park, making it a convenient stop during a bike ride along the coast.

History & Facts

The history of this remarkable site began back in the mid-19th century. The Hornbeam Alley was created as a classic berceau—an element of landscape architecture that is a living tunnel. Before the start of World War II, the alley was carefully tended: the trees were regularly pruned to maintain the perfect shape of the vault.

In the post-war years, the "green corridor" was temporarily forgotten and began to fall into neglect. However, in 2001, the city authorities carried out a large-scale restoration. Young hornbeams were planted, a sturdy metal frame was installed to support the branches, and modern night lighting was set up, returning the alley to its former glory.

The site received its special status in 2003 when the city council decided to officially recognize the alley as a natural monument. Today, it bears the name of Professor Ryszard Siwecki, an outstanding specialist who contributed to the study and preservation of the region's dendrological heritage.

Time Needed

To leisurely walk the entire length of the Hornbeam Alley and take a few memorable photos, you will only need about 20–40 minutes. It is an ideal place for a short break during a busy day of sightseeing.

If you plan to combine your walk with a visit to the nearby port, lighthouse, or beach, you should set aside about 1–2 hours to explore the area. In the evening, when the lights come on, you might want to linger longer, enjoying the silence and the romance of the moment.

Working Hours

The Hornbeam Alley is open to visitors 24 hours a day. You can enjoy a walk through this picturesque berceau at any time convenient for you, whether it's early morning or late evening.

The site is available to tourists 24 hours a day, seven days a week—from Monday to Sunday. The night lighting makes the alley safe and charming even after sunset.
