How to get to Chita

Getting There: Introduction

When planning a trip to Chita, the capital of the Zabaykalsky Krai, travellers discover a vital transport hub in Eastern Siberia. This city, with its rich history and harsh climate, attracts those wishing to explore the heritage of the Decembrists and the region's unique nature. You can reach Chita in various ways: regular flights arrive here, the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway passes through, and federal highways connect it across the vast expanses of Russia.

By Plane

The fastest way to reach the region is by air via the international Kadala (HTA) airport. It is located near the city limits and receives regular flights from major cities in the country, ensuring a reliable connection between the Transbaikal region and the centre. The airport possesses the necessary infrastructure for the comfortable arrival of passengers at any time of year.

If direct tickets are unavailable, travellers sometimes choose a flight to neighbouring Ulan-Ude (about 400 km away) or the airport in the settlement of Taksimo, although these options require a long ground transfer. To save time and energy, it is recommended to choose flights arriving directly at Kadala.

By Train

The railway is one of the most popular ways to get to the city, as the famous Trans-Siberian Railway passes through here. The main station, Chita-2, is a major stop where long-distance trains from Moscow, Vladivostok, and other regions halt, making the journey convenient and direct.

The train route allows you to enjoy picturesque views of the taiga and steppes, especially on the section from the direction of the city of Ulan-Ude. Although rail service exists in other settlements of the region, for example, in Taksimo (on the Baikal-Amur Mainline), it is the Trans-Siberian line that ensures the main passenger flow and maximum comfort en route.

The city has no major railway stations. Nearest cities with rail connections:

By Bus

Bus services connect the regional capital primarily with district centres and nearby regions. This is an affordable option for medium-distance trips, allowing you to observe the changing landscapes of Russia from the transport window. Regular services depart from the local bus station.

When planning a trip by bus, it is worth considering that distances in Siberia are vast, and travel time can be significant. It is recommended to check the schedule at bus stations in advance, as the frequency of trips may depend on the season and weather conditions.

By Car

Travelling by car gives freedom in choosing the route and stops. The most popular path leads from the direction of the city of Ulan-Ude: drivers will have to cover about 611 km along the "Baikal" federal highway, which will take approximately 9 hours. The road is distinguished by scenic views but requires attention on winding sections.

There is also a route from the settlement of Taksimo, however, it is suitable only for experienced drivers and prepared vehicles, as the distance exceeds 1012 km, and travel time can be around 20 hours. When preparing for the road in a private car or taxi, be sure to check the technical condition of the transport and fuel reserves.

Travel Tips

A trip to Chita requires a little preparation, given the region's geographical and climatic features. By following these practical tips, you can make your stay in the Transbaikal region as comfortable as possible.

  1. Seasonal clothing. The climate here is sharply continental. In winter, a down jacket and thermal underwear are mandatory (temperatures can drop below -30°C), while in summer, light clothing and sunglasses are useful, as it is very sunny here.
  2. Transport. It is convenient to move around the city by trolleybuses and minibuses. For comfort, it is better to install popular apps for hailing a taxi to see a fixed price.
  3. Finances. Bank cards are accepted in most shops and cafes. However, for trips to markets or remote areas, it is better to have cash rubles with you.
  4. Health. Pharmacies are everywhere, but it is better to take specific medicines with you. The climate is dry, so moisturising cream will be useful.
  5. Local cuisine. Be sure to try buuzy (pozy) in specialised cafes. This hearty meat dish is the calling card of local gastronomy.
  6. Etiquette. When visiting Buddhist datsans in the vicinity, follow the rules: walk around the territory clockwise (goroo) and behave respectfully.
  7. Safety. The city centre is safe for walking, but in the evening, it is worth avoiding poorly lit outskirts and courtyards.

Following these simple recommendations will help you avoid everyday inconveniences and focus on exploring the unique atmosphere of this Siberian city.
