The majestic Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the primary Orthodox church and a true point of pride for Rostov-on-Don. Located in the heart of the historical center, it is a magnificent example of architecture in the Russian-Byzantine style. The cathedral is a smaller-scale replica of Moscow's famous Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, giving it a particularly solemn and monumental appearance.

Built between 1854 and 1860 based on the design of the legendary architect Konstantin Thon, the church impresses with its austere harmony. The five-domed cathedral, which has a cross-shaped floor plan, is complemented by an elegant four-tier bell tower. Unlike many of the lavishly decorated churches of that era, this cathedral in Russia stands out for its lack of complex stucco work, focusing instead on the purity of its lines and the power of its golden domes.
Today, the cathedral serves as the spiritual center of the Rostov Diocese and is one of the city's most popular landmarks. The interior, adorned with skillful murals and a multi-tiered iconostasis, creates an atmosphere of peace and exaltation, attracting pilgrims and lovers of history and architecture from all over the world.
