Weather Overview

The climate in Pamplona can be described as temperate, with a noticeable oceanic influence. All four seasons are clearly defined here, creating a variety of weather conditions throughout the year. Unlike the Mediterranean coast of Spain, Pamplona is not characterized by intense summer heat, and winters here are cooler and wetter.

Summer, especially in July and August, is warm and relatively dry. The average temperature during these months hovers around +20°C, with daytime highs reaching a comfortable +25°C. This is the sunniest time of the year and the most popular for tourism. Winter, by contrast, is cool and damp, with average temperatures around +4-6°C. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons with mild but often changeable weather. A characteristic feature of Pamplona's climate is the high number of days with precipitation throughout almost the entire year, except for the peak of summer, so a light jacket or umbrella may come in handy even during the warm season.

Temperature

Pamplona's climate is distinguished by its temperate character and clearly defined seasons. Throughout the year, the temperature undergoes significant changes, transitioning from cool winters to very warm summers. The hottest months are July and August, when the average air temperature is around 20°C. In contrast, the coldest month is considered to be January, with an average temperature of just 4.7°C, creating a noticeable contrast with the summer period.

Summers in Pamplona are generally very warm and sunny. In July and August, daytime temperatures often rise to 25-26°C, creating ideal conditions for walks and outdoor activities. An important feature of the summer period is the noticeable diurnal temperature variation: after a hot day, nights become perceptibly cooler, and the thermometer drops to 14-15°C. Winter in the city is cool and humid. From December to February, average daytime temperatures fluctuate around 8-11°C, while night temperatures drop to 1-3°C, occasionally approaching freezing.

Spring and autumn in Pamplona are times of mild and comfortable weather. In spring, from March to May, temperatures gradually rise, nature comes alive, and the city fills with freshness. Autumn, especially in September and October, delights with pleasant warmth, which gradually gives way to the cool of November. These transitional seasons are ideal for those who prefer to avoid the extremes of summer heat and winter cold.

Precipitation

In Pamplona, precipitation falls quite evenly throughout the year, so there is no pronounced dry season characteristic of many other regions in Spain. The weather is often humid; however, the total amount of rainfall is not large, indicating a prevalence of light to moderate rains rather than heavy downpours.

The driest period in the city falls during the summer months. July and August are the sunniest and driest, with the least amount of precipitation and only 9-10 rainy days per month. September also remains relatively dry, making the end of summer and the beginning of autumn a comfortable time for walking around the city.

The highest probability of encountering rainy weather is from late autumn to mid-spring. March stands out particularly for the number of wet days, averaging 16 days with precipitation. The greatest volume of precipitation falls between October and January. In the winter months, especially in January, when temperatures drop to minimum values, rain can turn into wet snow.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Pamplona, it is important to consider the changeable weather and frequent precipitation throughout the year. The key principle for packing your suitcase is layering. Regardless of the season, evenings and mornings can be cool. An essential item in your luggage should be comfortable waterproof shoes, as there are many rainy days in the city, and it is best explored on foot. Don't forget to take an umbrella or a light waterproof jacket with a hood to protect you from sudden rain.

During the summer months (June to August), days can be warm and sunny, so you will need T-shirts, shorts, and light dresses. However, for evening walks, it is worth bringing a sweater or cardigan. Do not neglect sunscreen and a hat. In autumn and spring, the weather is very changeable: pack jeans, long-sleeved T-shirts, and a few sweaters to combine depending on the temperature. In winter (December to February), Pamplona is cold, so your suitcase must include a warm jacket, hat, scarf, and gloves. Warm sweaters and trousers will be the foundation of your wardrobe during this period.
