How to get to Sigiriya

You can reach this amazing destination in various ways, choosing between the speed of air travel, the scenic views from a car window, or a vibrant train journey with a transfer. The fastest way to reach the foot of the ancient fortress is by air. The local airport, Sigiriya SLAF Base (GIU), is located in the immediate vicinity of the attraction, handling domestic flights and providing convenient connections to key points on the island.

If a direct flight is not available, you can consider flights to neighbouring major cities. The nearest alternative airports are located in the city of Kandy (about 75 km away) and in Trincomalee (86 km away), from where it is easy to continue the journey by ground transport.

There is no direct railway connection to Sigiriya itself, as the town does not have its own station. However, train travel in Sri Lanka is considered one of the most picturesque in the world, so many tourists choose a combined route.

The optimal solution is to take a train to nearby major transport hubs. It is most convenient to disembark in the city of Kandy (75 km) or travel to the station in Trincomalee (86 km), and cover the remaining distance by taxi or bus.

Although direct express routes to the rock itself may be absent from long-distance schedules, the island's bus network is extensively developed. Travellers often make their way to the nearest major hub — the city of Dambulla, from where local buses and tuk-tuks regularly run to Sigiriya.

This is one of the most budget-friendly ways to travel, allowing you to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere. A bus ride is a true adventure, offering the chance to see life in Sri Lanka from the inside.

Travelling by car or taxi offers freedom of movement and the opportunity to enjoy tropical landscapes. A popular route leads from the city of Kandy: you will need to drive about 89 km, which usually takes approximately 2.5 hours along winding but beautiful roads.

Another convenient option is the route from the coast, from Trincomalee. The distance is around 99 km, and the travel time is about 1.9 hours. Renting a car with a private driver is often the most comfortable solution for such transfers.

To ensure your visit to Sigiriya is as comfortable as possible and leaves only pleasant memories, it is worth preparing for the specifics of this location in advance. Here are a few useful recommendations for planning your visit.

1. Clothing and Footwear. For climbing the rock, choose comfortable, non-slip footwear (trainers or trekking sandals). Clothing should be light and made of natural fabrics, but should cover your shoulders and knees, especially if you plan to visit nearby temples.
2. Best Time to Climb. Start your ascent as early as possible, right after the ticket counters open (around 7:00 AM), or closer to sunset. This will help avoid the exhausting heat and large crowds of tourists.
3. Sun and Insect Protection. Be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent. There may be mosquitoes in the jungle and near water.
4. Water and Hydration. There are no kiosks on the summit or the stairs. Bring at least 1.5–2 litres of water per person, as the climb requires physical effort.
5. Caution with Monkeys. There are many macaques on the complex grounds. Do not feed them, do not tease them, and keep your belongings (glasses, phones, food) held tight or hidden in a backpack — the animals can be bold.
6. Wasps and Silence. Wild wasps live on the rock. Loud sounds can provoke them, so it is recommended to maintain silence and calm while on the stairs.
