About

Imagine a place where the sea breeze meets the scent of centuries-old trees, and modern life is harmoniously woven into a medieval setting. This is Almedalen—a picturesque public park that is rightfully considered the "green heart" of Visby. Located on the island of Gotland, this park is not just a recreation area, but a place with a rich past, inseparably linked to the history of all of Sweden.

The name of the attraction translates as "the elm valley." Interestingly, until the 19th century, a completely different life bustled here: it was the city's main harbor, welcoming merchant ships. Today, only the proximity to the water and the majestic walls surrounding the park remind visitors of the port's former glory. It is now a cozy oasis with ponds, well-kept lawns, and magnificent views of ancient architecture.

For tourists, Almedalen is valuable for its peaceful atmosphere and proximity to key cultural sites, such as Uppsala University - Campus Gotland and the modern city library. It is the perfect space to feel the spirit of the Hanseatic city while slowly walking between the seashore and the legendary fortifications.

What to Do

In Almedalen, everyone will find something to enjoy. During the warmer months, the park becomes the perfect spot for picnics on the soft grass and leisurely reading in the shade of the elms. You can stroll along the winding paths, enjoying the silence and watching the birds by the local pond. If you climb the nearby Klinten hills, a stunning view of the old town's red-tiled roofs and the endless blue of the Baltic Sea opens up before you.

History and architecture enthusiasts will love exploring the surroundings: the park is literally nestled between the sea and the famous city wall. You can spend ages examining the ancient masonry and then stop by the neighboring Botanical Garden to appreciate the diversity of the local flora. Many walking tours of Visby end right here, allowing travelers to catch their breath after an eventful day.

While Almedalen is famous as the venue for major public forums in July, the rest of the year it is a sanctuary of peace and contemplation. Open-air exhibitions or small concerts are often held here, but even on an ordinary day, a walk through the "elm valley" will give you a sense of harmony and allow you to take magnificent panoramic photos of the medieval fortress.

Getting There

Finding Almedalen is quite easy, as it is located in the heart of the historical center at Birgers gränd 7. If you are arriving in Visby by cruise ship, the walk from the port to the park’s pathways will take no more than 10–15 minutes. This is the perfect route for those who want to immediately immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the medieval city.

For travelers flying into Gotland Airport, the journey to the center is about 20 kilometers. You can take bus No. 10 or catch a taxi—the trip takes approximately 20–30 minutes. Within the city itself, public transport is hardly necessary, as most key locations are within walking distance.

Many tourists prefer to rent bicycles, which is a very popular way to get around the island. The park is just a few minutes' walk from the main shopping streets and the fortress wall, making it a natural resting point during walking tours.

History & Facts

The history of this place dates back to the Viking Age, when the area of the modern park was a bustling harbor. In the Middle Ages, the Old Port (Gamle Hamn) was located here—a vital trading hub for the Hanseatic League. Ships from all over Europe moored at the docks just outside the city walls, turning the town into one of the wealthiest centers in the Baltic.

Interestingly, the transformation of the port into dry land occurred naturally. Due to the effects of ancient glaciation and the gradual post-glacial rebound (land rise), the harbor began to shallow rapidly. Eventually, the sea receded, and by the 19th century, it was decided to create a public park on the site of the former docks. It received its modern name in the 1870s when numerous elms were planted (in Swedish, Almedalen means "the elm valley").

In the 20th century, Almedalen gained new fame, this time in politics. In 1968, a tradition of public speeches began here, which grew into the annual "Almedalen Week"—the largest democratic event in Sweden. Thus, the quiet coastal park became a symbol of open dialogue and civil liberties.

Today, Almedalen is an integral part of the historical landscape listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The proximity of modern university buildings and the library to ancient church ruins and fortress walls creates a unique architectural contrast, serving as a reminder of Gotland's centuries-old history.

Time Needed

Usually, 1–2 hours is enough for a leisurely stroll through Almedalen. This provides plenty of time to walk along the shaded alleys, take beautiful photos with the sea in the background, and relax on one of the benches while admiring the panorama of the old town.

If you plan to have a picnic or want to combine your park visit with a trip to the neighboring library and an exploration of sections of the city wall, you should set aside about 3 hours. The park serves as an excellent starting or ending point for a longer walking route through the entire historical center.

Working Hours

One of the park's main advantages is its accessibility. Almedalen is open to visitors 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can come here at dawn to watch the sunrise by the sea or stop by for a late-night stroll under the glow of the streetlights.

According to official information, the operating hours are as follows:
