General Weather Overview

Kaohsiung, located in the south of Taiwan, boasts a tropical climate that ensures warm weather throughout most of the year. Average annual temperatures here are comfortable, making the city attractive to visit at any time. Even in the coolest months, such as January and December, the average temperature holds around 19-20°C, while summer months bring heat with averages reaching 28°C and above.

Two main seasons are clearly distinguishable in Kaohsiung: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season usually lasts from November to March, characterized by minimal rainfall (only 1-2 mm per month) and a large number of sunny days. Many consider this the ideal time for exploring the city and its surroundings. From May to October comes the rainy season, peaking in June, July, and August. During these months, rainfall increases significantly, reaching 10-15 mm, and the number of rainy days can exceed 20 per month. Despite the rain, the temperature remains high, creating a humid and hot atmosphere.

Thus, when planning a trip to Kaohsiung, it is worth considering these seasonal features. If you prefer dry and sunny weather for active recreation, it is better to choose the period from November to March. If you are not afraid of tropical downpours and want to catch the lush greenery, then the summer months, despite the humidity, can also offer their own charms, especially if you plan activities with possible rainfall in mind.

What to Pack

To make your journey to Kaohsiung as comfortable as possible, it is important to choose the right wardrobe, taking into account the local climate. Since warm weather prevails in the city year-round, the basis of your clothing should consist of light, breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. Do not forget comfortable shoes for long walks, as there is much to see in Kaohsiung! High SPF sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are also mandatory attributes, especially in the summer months. The principle of layering in clothing will be your faithful companion, allowing you to easily adapt to temperature changes between the street and air-conditioned rooms.

Kaohsiung's climate has two distinct seasons. The rainy season, lasting roughly from May to October, brings high humidity and frequent rainfall, peaking in August. During this period, you will definitely need a compact umbrella or a light raincoat. Clothes made of quick-drying materials will be very handy. From November to March comes the dry season: there is significantly less rain, and the temperature becomes more moderate. It is still warm during the day, but evenings, especially in December-February, can be cool (minimum temperature around 16-17°C), so a light jacket, cardigan, or sweater will be very useful. Regardless of the season, do not forget insect repellent, especially if you plan walks in nature.
