Overview

The climate in Hengchun, located in Taiwan, is characterized as tropical, with warm temperatures throughout the year. The average annual temperature varies only slightly, from about 20.5°C in January to 27.9°C in July. This means that even in the "coolest" months, the weather remains comfortably warm, while the summer months bring true tropical heat.

Hengchun has two distinct seasons: dry and wet. The dry season typically lasts from November to April, when rainfall is minimal (1-2 mm per month) and the number of rainy days is low (from 6 to 9). The wet season begins in May and continues until October. During this period, precipitation increases significantly, peaking in August (14 mm), and the number of rainy days also rises—for example, June and August can see more than 20 rainy days.

Thus, travelers can expect predominantly warm and sunny weather from late autumn to mid-spring, and wetter but still very warm weather from late spring to mid-autumn. Consistently high temperatures make Hengchun an attractive destination for those who love the heat, though it’s worth considering the distinct rainy season when planning your trip.

Hengchun enjoys a warm climate year-round, making it an attractive destination for tourists. The hottest month is usually July, with an average temperature of 27.9°C and daytime highs reaching 29.0°C. Conversely, the coolest month is January, with an average temperature of 20.5°C and nightly lows around 19.2°C. Overall, the annual range of average temperatures is comfortable, fluctuating from a pleasant 20.5°C to a very warm 27.9°C.

The summer period in Hengchun, which lasts roughly from May to September, is characterized by hot and fairly humid weather. Average temperatures in these months are consistently above 26°C, peaking in June, July, and August, when the thermometer often reads 27.4°C - 27.9°C. Daytime highs at the peak of summer can reach 28-29°C. These months also see the highest rainfall, which contributes to high humidity levels.

Winter in Hengchun, covering December, January, and February, is mild and pleasantly cool. Monthly average temperatures during this period range from 20.5°C to 21.5°C. Even on the coldest January nights, temperatures rarely drop below 19°C. An interesting feature of Hengchun's climate is the minimal daily temperature fluctuation. The difference between average maximum and minimum daily temperatures throughout the year usually does not exceed 2-3°C, ensuring relatively stable weather conditions throughout the day.

Precipitation

Hengchun experiences a fairly clear distinction between wet and dry seasons throughout the year. Precipitation here occurs mainly in the form of rain, as air temperatures remain high all year round, ruling out the possibility of snowfall.

The rainy season in Hengchun usually lasts from May to October. The highest amount of precipitation and the maximum number of rainy days occur during the summer months. Humidity peaks in August, with an average of 14 mm of rainfall and about 24 rainy days. In May and September, rainfall decreases slightly (5 mm each), but rainy days are still quite frequent – 15 and 16, respectively.

In the remaining dry season months, such as January, February, April, and December, rain occurs on average for 7 to 9 days, but the total amount of precipitation remains low, not exceeding 2 mm.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Hengchun, it’s important to keep in mind its warm climate, which persists year-round: average temperatures range from 20.5°C to 27.9°C. Your wardrobe should primarily consist of light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen. Don't forget comfortable shoes for walking around the city and its picturesque surroundings. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are your best companions for protection against the strong sun at any time of year. During the drier and cooler months (November to April), when rainfall is minimal, evening temperatures can drop to 19-20°C. For such occasions, bring a light sweater, cardigan, or windbreaker, which may also come in handy given the occasional breeze in coastal areas.

From May to October, Hengchun enters its wetter season, with peak rainfall and rainy days in June-August. During this period, we recommend bringing a light raincoat or a compact umbrella. Clothing made of quick-drying materials will be especially practical. Despite the rain, temperatures remain high, so layering is key: a light long-sleeved shirt will protect you from both the sun and the chill of air-conditioned rooms. Regardless of the season, it’s a good idea to bring a small basic medical kit and insect repellent, especially if you plan on outdoor activities.
