Overview

The climate of Lanyu can be described as humid tropical, with a strong oceanic influence that smooths out temperature fluctuations. It is practically eternal summer here: the weather remains warm and comfortable year-round, without frost or exhausting heat. Thanks to its location, the island is characterized by high humidity and fresh sea breezes.

The temperature regime on the island is remarkably stable. Even in the coolest winter months, January and February, the average temperature stays at a pleasant 22°C. Summer here is warm but not extremely hot—in June and July, the air warms up to an average of 28°C. There are practically no distinct seasons with sharp weather changes, making Lanyu an attractive destination at any time of year.

An important feature of the local weather is the frequency of precipitation. Rainy days are common throughout the year. According to statistics, even in the "driest" spring months, rainfall can occur for more than two weeks a month, and in winter, the number of rainy days reaches its peak. Travelers should be prepared for weather changes and always have a raincoat handy, although the rains are often short-lived.

Temperature

The climate on Lanyu Island is remarkably mild and stable, making it an attractive destination almost year-round. There are no sharp seasonal contrasts: the annual temperature range is extremely small. The coolest months are traditionally January and December, with averages around 22°C, while the peak heat occurs in June and July, when the air warms up to 28–29°C.

Summer on the island can be described as warm but not stiflingly hot. From June to August, the average temperature stays around 28.3°C — 28.4°C, creating comfortable conditions for a beach holiday. The winter period here is very mild: even on the coldest days of February, the thermometer rarely drops below 21.7°C. This time of year feels like a pleasant, mild summer in temperate latitudes, ideal for long walks and getting to know the local culture.

One of the key features of Lanyu's temperature regime is the minimal difference between day and night readings. Daily fluctuations are often less than 1–1.5 degrees, indicating a strong oceanic influence that smooths out any temperature spikes. Thanks to this, nights here remain as warm as the days, and tourists are unlikely to need warm clothes for evening strolls.

Precipitation

The climate of Lanyu is characterized by a high frequency of precipitation throughout the year, so there is virtually no distinct dry season. Rain is a common occurrence that maintains the island's lush tropical greenery. Travelers should have a raincoat or umbrella with them regardless of when they visit, as even during the "driest" periods, the number of rainy days rarely falls below 16 per month.

The winter period is marked by the most regular rainfall. January holds the record for this indicator: precipitation can occur for 27 days, making it the cloudiest month. However, despite the high frequency, the total volume of water in winter is small, indicating a prevalence of light drizzle or short rains rather than prolonged downpours.

A slight increase in precipitation volume is observed in late summer and early autumn. August is considered the wettest month in terms of rainfall (about 15 mm), followed by September. Relatively less rain falls in spring: March and April are characterized by minimal rainfall, although an umbrella might still come in handy almost every other day.

Packing Tips

The climate on Lanyu Island remains warm and comfortable year-round, so the base of your wardrobe should consist of light and breathable items. T-shirts, shorts, and summer trousers made of natural fabrics are ideal for daytime walks, as the average temperature even in the "coldest" months (January-February) rarely drops below 22°C. Don't forget swimwear, a hat, and high-SPF sunscreen, as the tropical sun is intense here even when it is partly cloudy.

Given the high humidity and high number of rainy days (rain is possible for 20–27 days per month depending on the season), it is vital to prepare for the unpredictable weather. Instead of an umbrella, which may be useless due to Lanyu's famous winds, it is better to bring a high-quality raincoat or a windbreaker. This is especially relevant if you plan to rent a scooter for sightseeing. We also recommend bringing a waterproof case for your phone and documents.

For exploring the scenic trails and rocky coastline, choose comfortable shoes with non-slip soles, such as trekking sandals or light sneakers. If your trip falls during the winter period (December to March), it is worth packing a light sweatshirt or a long-sleeved shirt: although temperatures remain high, the combination of sea breeze and humidity in the evenings can create a chilly feel.
